POSITION:                Machine Shop Lead

LOCATION:              Blackfoot, Idaho


The Machine Shop Lead Person will provide support to Department Supervisor on production of equipment, employee supervision, allocation and organization of resources, project management, and the development and achievement of departmental and organizational goals.  Lead will be available for extended shifts, on-call, and overtime work where appropriate in order to respond to the needs of the build plan.  Teamwork and customer service skills are important as Leads are expected to work directly and indirectly with employees, other leads, supervisors and managers, and outside vendors. Lead will consistently demonstrate a high level of responsibility and accountability.


Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.

  • Spend 85% to 95% of time producing product as required by Department Supervisor, including:

    • Set up, program, and operate machining equipment according to build plan needs;

    • Read and understand technical drawings and geometric tolerances;

    • Perform close tolerance and general turning/milling work on both manual and CNC equipment to produce accurate parts per customer orders and in accordance with the timelines identified by the build plan;

    • Complete final inspection of parts and components prior to releasing to downline customer to ensure highest quality product is being delivered;

    • Perform routine preventative maintenance and troubleshooting analysis before, during, and after machining processes, making necessary adjustments to ensure smooth operation of machines while maintaining quality standards;

  • Become a technical expert for products manufactured and be top performer in workmanship, safety, and work ethics;

  • Understand and teach the definition of quality and measurements for determining quality to ensure that team members produce high-quality workmanship;

  • Train team members in new products and techniques, working one-on-one when necessary;

  • Assist Supervisor in setting and achieving production goals, including maintaining and tracking production hours;

  • Supervise and support team members to ensure all production schedules are met;

  • Ensure all established processes and procedures are implemented and adhered to;

  • Maintain correct and efficient flow of work on shop floor, including diagnosing and resolving issues with parts and overseeing parts rework;

  • Ensure preventative maintenance checks, procedures, turn-down reports, and data sheets are completed and accurate on a daily basis;

  • Work with Department Supervisor to ensure necessary resources, such as parts and documentation, are accurate and available to meet schedules;

  • Effectively communicate to Supervisors or Managers when performance evaluations disciplinary actions are  required;

  • Effectively communicate and coordinate with all levels of the organization to analyze and resolve production issues inside and outside the department.


  • Minimum of 2 years schooling, training, and/or experience in machining technology preferred;

  • Ability to consistently machine close tolerances;

  • Well-developed knowledge of processes, equipment, parts, systems, tools, and machinery used in a machine shop;

  • Experience reading and interpreting instructional drawings and schematics;

  • Proficiency in basic shop math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division);

  • Proficiency using all types of measuring tools as required (tape measures, micrometers, calipers, etc.)

  • Ability to successfully manage multiple employees, projects, and deadlines;

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal;

  • Ability to effectively work database management systems, spreadsheets, word processing documents, and other applicable computer systems and software.


  • CNC and manual lathe and mill, drill press, saw, grinder, hand tools, iron worker, saw, drill press, shear, press brake, burn table, water jet, belt sander, forklift, etc.;

  • Other machines and equipment specific to departmental or facility needs.

Worker is subject to inside environmental conditions.  May have temperature changes due to working inside a shop.  There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level.  Includes a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places.  One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin:  Fumes, odors, dust mists, gases or poor ventilation.  There is air and or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids.

PAY:   $18.00/HR. or DOE
