Overview of School:

Sonoma Academy is an independent high school located in Santa Rosa, CA on a 34-acre campus, surrounded by 1,000 acres of protected open space, at the base of Taylor Mountain. Founded in 2001, it provides an engaging, challenging, and innovative college preparatory education and a supportive community for motivated learners from Sonoma, Napa, Marin, Lake, and Mendocino counties. The school currently serves 330 students in grades 9 through 12 and is increasing its enrollment each year. Of our 330 students, 31% self-identify as students of color and 6% of our students are international students. Our students come from 80+ middle schools, ensuring a broad mixture of students from all over the greater North Bay Area.

Position overview:

Sonoma Academy is seeking a dedicated and passionate PE teacher to join our team for the 2024-25 school year. As a PE teacher, you will be responsible for promoting physical activity, developing physical skills, and encouraging a healthy lifestyle among students. You will have the opportunity to inspire and influence our community through engaging and dynamic lessons. The position could also be in combination with coaching (assistant or head coaching) in our athletic program or strength and conditioning program. As we are changing the structure of our school schedule, assigned PE classes would be between 8:30-3:30. There may be additional responsibilities assigned during the school day (supervising fitness spaces on a set schedule) Other assignments (coaching, assistant coaching, strength and conditioning, etc) could be assigned during and after school hours.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver engaging and age-appropriate PE lessons.
  • Instruct students on a variety of sports and fitness activities.
  • Assess and monitor students' physical abilities and progress.
  • Promote teamwork, sportsmanship, and fair play among students.
  • Plan and organize PE events, such as sports days and competitions.
  • Collaborate with other teachers to incorporate physical activity into other subjects.
  • Create a positive and inclusive learning environment for all students.

Required Skills, Education and Experiences:

  • Demonstrated skills associated with both the development and delivery of PE and fitness programs.
  • Bachelor's degree in Physical Education or a related field
  • Previous experience teaching PE, coaching, or leading fitness classes.
  • Strong knowledge of various sports and fitness activities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to motivate and inspire students to participate in physical activities.
  • Familiarity with current trends and best practices in PE education

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience in developing and teaching PE programming in a high school setting.
  • Certifications in Strength & Conditioning (Individual, group or similar) and/or YOGA

Compensation:

  • Sonoma Academy has a multi-step salary scale in place for faculty members that includes differentials for advanced degrees and annual guaranteed step increases. The current salary scale for full time faculty ranges from $76,908 to $147,907. The current salary scale for a part-time, 40% faculty position ranges from $30,000 to $59,162.8. The school will evaluate the faculty member's relevant teaching experience, FTE calculation and they will be placed on the scale at the appropriate level upon hiring.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to sit and stand for several hours at a time
  • Ability to see at close distances and view a computer monitor
  • Ability to exert physical effort required to lead PE classes, including balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects weighing up to 40 pounds
