Job Description
Under the supervision of the Athletic Director, the Head Tennis Coach oversees all aspects of the Sonoma Academy tennis program.
MAIN DUTIES
- Coach and instruct students in the proper use of equipment and the rules of tennis.
- Supervise students during practices, athletic competitions, and travel to and from events.
- Maintain student discipline, including prevention of hazing, harassment, and discrimination, in alignment with the Sonoma Academy Mission Statement.
- Oversee inventory, care, and proper use of equipment and facilities.
- Assess student-athlete performance and make coaching decisions based on those evaluations.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of injury prevention and basic sports medicine practices.
- Ability to teach and motivate high school students.
- Current CPR, First Aid certification (required) as well as other training as required by the CIF, NCS and Sonoma Academy.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with assistant coaches and athletic staff.
ABILITY TO
- Exhibit positive leadership, sportsmanship, and professional integrity.
- Communicate effectively with the Athletic Director, school administrators, staff, and parents.
- Build and maintain strong rapport with opposing coaches, school staff, and athletic officials.
- Organize, plan, and execute practices and match schedules in coordination with the Athletic Director and school calendar.
- Assist the Athletic Director with program administrative requirements.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Experience teaching and coaching tennis at the high school, collegiate, or professional level.
- Competitive playing experience in tennis at the high school, collegiate, or professional level.
- Training in coaching pedagogy, child development, and/or experience working with youth athletes.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Successful completion of employment background screening/verification.
- Ability to exert physical effort during coaching, including carrying equipment.
- Willingness to work in varied and extreme outdoor conditions, including heat and cold.
POSITION-SPECIFIC NOTES (Sonoma Academy Tennis)
- Majority of practices and matches will be offsite (no tennis courts on campus).
- Stipend available for 1 head coach ($4500 - $6000 depending on previous experience – in the right situation we will consider co-coaches)
- Stipend available for an assistant coach
- Team will compete in the CMC South League and NCS Division II.
- CMC tennis is coed (boys and girls).
- Season begins Monday, February 9th, 2026.
- Season end date depends on league and NCS qualification, but the latest date would be May 1st – May 16th, 2026.
- Practices and competitions typically take place Monday–Friday, with limited weekend events.
- Ideal practice time is 4:00–6:00 PM, though adjustments may be required depending on coach availability and facility scheduling.
- Must have valid drivers license and clean driving record in order to transport students in school vans.
