Internal Application: Senior Director of International Education

Sesame Workshop is seeking a Senior Director of International Education. The Senior Director will provide leadership for Sesame Workshop’s international social impact work, including its humanitarian and development context programs. Working closely with the leadership team of the Social Impact organization, this individual will be instrumental in setting strategic direction, providing technical leadership, supporting capacity building, and ensuring delivery of results for our ECD programs around the world. This person will also be responsible for driving cross-sectoral support for the fundraising, implementation, and delivery of the International Social Impact department’s educational strategy.

Global Program Strategy
- Set educational vision and goals in Sesame’s International Social Impact department
- Develop and guide the implementation of multi-year strategic plans to achieve educational objectives and to expand our reach among children and caregivers
- Guide the translation of project curricula into engaging, impactful, and measurable child- and family-facing media, working closely with Creative/Production teams
- Represent Sesame’s internal and external partners in the education and international development communities
- Lead the development of evidence-based curriculum and programming in order to deliver results for children; establish and report on relevant metrics for measuring progress against program objectives
- Shape and implement strategies to ensure that Sesame’s International Social Impact team develops, maintains, and grows technical capacity in education and humanitarian programming
- Ensure that Sesame Country Offices have adequate technical support and resourcing to successfully deliver on individual program needs as well as broader strategic objectives; work to build the capacity of these offices to deliver impactful educational programs
- Represent Sesame at technical conferences and through academic publications
- Lead Sesame’s international educational agenda and drive results across the International Social Impact portfolio
- Oversee educational curriculum, content development, and implementation of Sesame’s International Social Impact programs; ensure the necessary resources are in place to guide and support country-level program implementation
- Identify and oversee the evaluation of new approaches to advancing Sesame’s International Social Impact priorities, with special attention to developing shared best practices and approaches that can be applied globally
- Ensure that Sesame’s work leverages current internal and external research findings
- Manage technical education staff based in New York and abroad
- Lead in the establishment of a results-oriented culture of excellence that fosters respect among Sesame staff and promotes the recruitment, retention, and management of diverse staff in a safe and empowering environment
- Work with project management professionals to support and ensure project deliverables.
Education and Experience Required
- 8-10 years of progressively senior leadership positions in early childhood education/development on a global level.
- Direct and recent ECD (ages 0-6) hands-on experience is required.
- Doctorate degree in a relevant discipline (Education and ECD focus strongly preferred); or Master’s degree with significant corresponding professional experience
- Significant experience working in development settings, managing large-scale programs and portfolios
- Established networks in and familiarity with education, technical, and donor community
- Demonstrated global mindset and ability to work effectively across countries, cultures, and time zones
- Experience working on media-based programming in social impact development or humanitarian contexts
- Experience within broadcasting and/or media production environment
- Ability to travel at least 25% of the time
- Experience creating and executing large-scale strategies; proven ability to expand and diversify a portfolio
- Experience driving change through influencing and managing remote cross-functional teams and demonstrated an ability to innovate
- Effective communicator and coalition-builder with internal and external stakeholders (including creative and production media), with proven ability to persuade, collaborate, and build momentum around new ideas
- Proven success managing multi-stakeholder projects and cross-functional teams
- Willingness to take risks and learn from mistakes
- Ability to identify, attract, and develop high-caliber staff, foster and build effective teams and a positive work culture
- Ability to effectively represent organizational priorities and interests
- Experience working in the Middle East, South Asia, or Sub-Saharan Africa
- Knowledge of one or more languages other than English
