Senior Director, Finance

Job Description

Sesame Workshop has an immediate need for an experienced Senior Director, Finance to oversee and own the budgeting, financial planning and reporting for the International Social Impact group.  The position calls for a detailed oriented professional with a strong accounting background and working knowledge of donor budgeting and reporting.  The Senior Director, Finance must be comfortable interacting with various levels of management and highly confidential information.   

 

The ideal candidate is someone who can build financial models, gather the information necessary to forecast revenues and expenses, and think into the future, but who will understand how to incorporate prior performance into planning and budgeting process.  It also requires someone who can operate independently and think for themselves but is willing to bring that independence into a team environment and share information with others, all working towards common goals.   We are looking for someone who can delegate responsibility, comfortable speaking and presenting financial information and recommendations to all areas of senior management.  Finally, the ideal candidate will have previous experience working on a team providing financial support to offices/subsidiaries outside of the United States.  

 

Responsibilities:

 

Accounting, Finance and Operations

  • Manage all areas of the accounting and finance functions for the International Social Impact department, including general ledger and funder program budgeting, accounting and reporting.  
  • Plan and execute the coordination and preparation of the International Social Impact department’s annual budget, quarterly closings and estimates, and oversight of all program budgets.  
  • Provide International Social Impact’s operational management with perspective and insight on overall departmental P&L, including identifying near and long-term risks and opportunities and staff capacity and utilization.  
  • Lead consolidation of branch offices and subsidiaries (currently India, Bangladesh and South Africa) and ensure conformance with US GAAP reporting and disclosure requirements. Act as the main “point of contact” for foreign office finance leads.
  • Work with Compliance Director to monitor program activity for compliance with laws and regulations as required by the funding source as outlined in program contracts.
  • Responsible for program budget preparation, budget narratives, monitoring and communicating financial status to appropriate program staff.
  • Answer questions for funders about budgets, financial plans, “pipelines” for the project, expenditure timelines and projections, and underlying budget assumptions.
  • Review grant/sponsorship/other revenue deal memos and grant/sponsorship/other revenue contracts for financial implications.  
  • Review plans to spend (timeline changes, production plan changes, relocation plans, NGO formation plans, etc.) for budget applicability, reasonableness, compliance with regulations.  
  • Attendance at and participation in team meetings.
  • Review third party/sub-grantee budgets, contracts, cash flows, deliverables (to match against funder agreements) and revise when necessary.  
  • Prepare updated quarterly estimates/project ultimates for projects based on cost reports, the latest information from the project team, and estimate-to-complete discussions.  
  • Monitor actuals vs. budgets and notify Project Directors, VP Finance, Social Impact & Philanthropy and other key team members of budget variances and/or the need for revised budgets.
  • Support annual audit, including an annual uniform guidance audit, as it relates to international projects and subsidiaries.   
  • Work collaboratively in cross-disciplinary teams to develop program initiatives and corresponding budgets.  
  • Partner with the SVP and Project Directors/Managers in the International Social Impact Department to keep on track financially by providing appropriate, clear, and timely financial and business recommendations.
  • Ensure that budgeting, financial planning and reporting “best practices” are shared with program teams and provide the necessary support to carry out these “best practices.”
  • Partner with Finance, Legal and Operations to assist with opening new offices outside the US, as may become necessary.   

 

Team Development & Leadership

  • Supervise Senior Manager, Finance - Social Impact & Philanthropy in s/he’s support of projects, including training as required, delegation of responsibility, and monitoring of performance.
  • Oversee, direct and organize the workflow of Senior Manager, Finance – Social Impact & Philanthropy.
  • Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.
  • Ensure staff receives timely and appropriate training, development and feedback.  
  • Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach; assign accountabilities; set objectives; establish priorities, and monitor and evaluate results.   

 

Qualifications: 

  • Must have the legal right to work in the United States
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • CPA preferred
  • 9+ years of experience in financial planning, financial management, accounting and non-profit accounting or funding experience; thorough understanding of GAAP
  • At least 4 years managerial or supervisory experience in financial areas
  • Thorough understanding of General Ledger systems; knowledge of NetSuite and/or TM1 a plus
  • Experience with US government grants and contracts and the related compliance requirements
  • Experienced in budgeting and reporting in foreign currency; currency conversion
  • International business experience including experience with international branch offices or subsidiaries, including knowledge of international accounting standards and taxation
  • Proficiency in Excel and PowerPoint
