Manager, International Social Impact

Job Description

Sesame Workshop seeks a dynamic business office Manager to provide operational support for the International Social Impact (ISI) department, working across three core functions:  (1) department strategy, (2) process and operations, and (3) policies and procedures. The Manager is responsible for ensuring operational effectiveness of the department by tracking and reporting on departmental priorities, maintaining key operational tools, and promoting adherence to key policies and procedures that help set Sesame Workshop up for success in our international social impact programs. 

This position reports to the Director of the ISI department and is based at our headquarters office in New York City. Sesame Workshop is a hybrid work environment with a minimum requirement of 2-days per week in the office.   

This is a regular, full-time, benefits eligible position. 


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Department Strategy

  • Provide support for ISI strategic planning and program development processes (includes managing agendas, providing facilitation support, and tracking follow-up for Strategy Offsites and Goal-Setting Workshops):
    • Monitor, maintain, and follow-up on workplans to execute against annual departmental goals and strategic initiatives (includes data collection, verification, and analysis of key performance indicators)
    • Draft communications related to strategic priorities and progress (includes Board Deck, Global Advisory, and other routine internal communications)
    • Support strategic initiatives within the department as needed, including ISI’s DE&I initiatives and Decolonizing Aid efforts

Department Process & Operations

  • Manage ISI Administrative Budget expense tracking, working with Finance to ensure accurate planning, estimates, and cost reporting
  • Facilitate use of key departmental systems by all department personnel, serving as a resource for problem-solving and capacity-building; collect user feedback on key processes and systems; provide suggestions for process improvement (includes Project Management tools, Knowledge Management tools, and Partnership database)
  • Maintain the ISI Resource Center (e.g. overview presentations, fact sheets, character guides, photography and image repositories, reference documents, best practice guides); develop new departmental resources, as needed
  • Maintain critical departmental tools and oversee day-to-day operations across areas including:
    • Personnel management (recruitment, onboarding, offboarding, paid time off tracking, annual goal-setting, annual performance management, managing department interns)
    • Reporting (funded projects reports, quarterly reporting, Form 990, ISI Monthly Meeting)
    • Legal (department-generated contract tracking, legal priorities tracking)
    • Finance (staff allocations data review and distribution, timesheet submissions, expense and invoices submissions and accrual tracking)

Department Policies & Procedures

  • Manage day-to-day implementation of departmental policies and procedures; ensure training is delivered at regular intervals and completed by all department personnel; revise policies and procedures, as needed (e.g. Recruitment procedures, Onboarding procedures, Offboarding procedures, Travel policy, Remote work policy, Contract-generation policy, Knowledge Management policy)
  • Develop and roll-out additional operational processes, as needed, with guidance from the Director of ISI Operations (e.g. legal agreement request management and tracking, finance tracking, vendor management)


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in International Affairs, Business, Education, Development or relevant field
  • 3-5 years of experience in an operations, strategy and/or administrative role ideally in an international non-profit setting
  • Organized self-starter able to take initiative and work independently and make decisions with limited oversight 
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a highly matrixed organization with a sense of urgency 
  • Ability to build relationships and work with key internal and external stakeholders of all levels  
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, demonstrated ability to aggregate and synthesize complex topics into concise, persuasive, and credible communications including via PowerPoint decks 
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to identify information sources, gather and interpret data, execute analysis, and present findings to team members and stakeholders 
  • Superior process management skills, including exceptional time management and follow-through, experience with deadline-driven projects in a fast-paced environment, strong attention to detail 
  • Ability to handle sensitive and/or confidential information and operate with discretion 
  • A willingness to work across time zones 
  • Experience and/or interest in international development, education, or media


DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

International Social Impact Programs is a division of the Social Impact and Philanthropy department that is responsible for growing Sesame Workshop’s global presence and initiating, implementing and strategically sustaining local brand adaptations to drive reach and impact. The team collaborates with a variety of international partners, stakeholders, and service providers to deliver educationally targeted, high-quality content through coalitions of local and global media, education, government, corporate, donor and civil society partners. International Impact must strategically connect and synchronize Sesame’s global networks at the regional and country-level and align content development with global development goals and global themes.
