Sesame Workshop is seeking an experienced Director of Strategic Partnerships to support the implementation of Ahlan Simsim - an early childhood development (ECD) initiative serving the needs of children displaced by conflict and host communities in Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, and Syria. This joint, five-year project with the International Rescue Committee is funded by the first MacArthur Foundation 100&Change, $100 million grant, the largest ECD intervention in the history of humanitarian response. The position is based in Amman, Jordan.
The Director of Strategic Partnerships will be part of a dynamic and evolving collaboration across two highly specialized organizations and will need to be an innovative, hands-on team-player. The position will be involved in planning and execution and working closely with experienced colleagues from a diverse set of professional and technical expertise. The right candidate should be a passionate and collaborative individual who will support other senior managers on the program.
The position requires a combination of knowledge and experience working in the education and humanitarian sectors, preferably across the countries of our program’s operations (Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, and Syria). The role would develop and deepen relationships with stakeholders involved in the sectors related to our program’s areas of work such as:
- humanitarian organizations like UN agencies, other INGOs (across the 4 countries)
- early childhood development (ministries, research institutions and other stakeholders related to ECD across the 3 countries, potential partners on diversity and inclusion)
- international humanitarian and development donors
This position will coordinate closely with IRC to ensure alignment in our engagement with the same stakeholders. The individual would attend the appropriate sector gathering, and other events, as decided. The right candidate would be closely engaged in strengthening our efforts to support the government and other stakeholders to adapt and adopt ECD models within their broader services to families. The Director would be responsible for communicating on those efforts internally and externally, as determined.
The right candidate will also support our key partners the IRC and NYU, including IRC’s implementation and NYU’s engagement in the region. Coordinate or participate in the appropriate meetings and events. Support other dimensions of our implementation such as Education, Research, Production and Communications by being involved in the development and distribution of educational materials, NYU’s research visits, supporting our engagement with production, and supporting our advocacy and communications needs.
The responsibilities include some basic legal and fiduciary functions, such as signatory duties.
Please note: The position would be based in Jordan, with frequent travel to Lebanon and Iraq, and regular travel to NYC and other locations in the Middle East as needed.
Candidates for the position should have a proven track record of successfully building and managing senior-level relationships with international agencies, national governments, donors and other actors involved in humanitarian work.
- Native Arabic speaker
- 7+ years of experience in complex project management, international development, refugee response, education
- 3+ years of experience managing management level positions, functions
- Demonstrated ability to work in a highly matrixed project team with a sense of urgency
- Advanced degree in relevant discipline a plus or equivalent years of experience
- Passion for Sesame Workshop’s mission
- Excellent communication and relationship management skills
The Ahlan Simsim program as a part of the humanitarian work of the International Social Impact division of the Social Impact and Philanthropy department that is responsible for growing Sesame Workshop’s global presence and initiating, implementing and strategically sustaining local brand adaptations to drive reach and impact. The team collaborates with a variety of international partners, stakeholders, and service providers to deliver educationally targeted, high-quality content through coalitions of local and global media, education, government, corporate, donor and civil society partners. International Impact must strategically connect and synchronize Sesame’s global networks at the regional and country-level and align content development with global development goals and global themes.
