Senior Director of Advancement Services

Job Description

Responsible for strategic planning and implementation for development operations within the Advancement Division. Serves as member of the senior Advancement leadership team. Responsible for the areas of advancement services, gift processing, data management, reporting, analytics, communications, prospect management and the Roanoke Fund.

Incumbent is responsible for targeted stewardship, personalized communications and marketing, and growth for annual support through the Roanoke Fund. Manage internal operations for increased productivity, efficiency and accountability. Help improve and strengthen relationships with all constituents of the college.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for all advancement operations, systems and database management, gift accounting, prospect and portfolio management, stewardship and donor relations (not including events), and annual giving, in coordination with the Vice President and Senior Leadership Team.
  • Provides direction and coordination of the overall strategy for Advancement communications that support fundraising priorities, engagement efforts, and Advancement Division goals.
  • Manage an effective program for recognition, involvement and stewardship of major and special gift donors with the Coordinator of Donor Relations. Ensures endowed scholarship reporting, recognition for giving societies and other stewardship actions are performed in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate with the Vice President for all internal operations support.
  • Supervise and supports the Director of Advancement Operations, Coordinator of Donor Relations, Director of the Roanoke Fund, Director of Prospect and Portfolio Management, and Director of Advancement Communications.
  • Develop overall strategy for growth for the Roanoke Fund through utilizing direct and indirect messaging, social media engagement in a way that increases alumni giving participation, drives annual growth of the Roanoke Fund and increases revenue and membership in the Maroon Club.
  • Develop overall strategy for database system management and utilization of CRM Advance through work with the Director of Advancement Operations. Increase efficiency and productivity through the software solutions to better assist the Advancement Division in setting and meeting annual goals as designed by the Vice President, President, and Board of Trustees.
  • Ensure consistent and accurate monthly reporting that tracks progress to goals
  • Lead implementation of technology to streamline and make stewardship more efficient.
  • Assist at Advancement functions as required.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness and affects changes required for improvement.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required, Master’s degree preferred.
  • 5-7 years of related work experience, Higher Education experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Office products with an ability to learn college specific programs. Knowledge of CRM Advance a plus.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Supervisory experience required with demonstrated expertise in managing and developing direct reports.
  • Familiarity of Annual Giving strategies and best practices.
  • Sensitivity to highly confidential information; complete discretion is required.
  • Knowledge of prospect research best practices and standard research tools, as well as gift processing and accounting standards.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to overcome giving objections and foster donor relationships.
  • Some evening and weekend work required.
