Writer and Editor

Job Description


Reboot is seeking a creative, collaborative storyteller and editor with a track record of persuasive writing for social good. You will guide us away from the doldrums, and towards Reboot’s true voice—direct, empathetic, precise, and lively. You will help us communicate our values, methods, and impact, illustrated with the colorful and surprising details of the work we do, to reach audiences both old and new. 

This is a part-time consultancy; hours to be negotiated. Availability for occasional in-office meetings in New York, London, or Abuja is preferred but not required.


Responsibilities

The Editor is responsible for creating and editing content, as well as for supporting colleagues of varying writing ability levels to produce both day-to-day and special projects in support of our communications, programs, and business development goals. Day-to-day needs might include drafting or editing articles, blog posts, our quarterly newsletter, internal project case studies, web copy, and drafts of speeches or talking points; and pitching our work and ideas to relevant media outlets. Special projects might include writing and editing guidebooks, publications, research reports, client memos, or business proposals. 

The Editor will be a key member of our editorial team, and will meet with editorial team members (Director of Advocacy, Comms and Advocacy Associate, and Visual Designer) on a weekly basis. 

Tasks will vary according to team needs, for example: 

  • Planning strategic content with the editorial team, to align with business needs or upcoming speaking engagements

  • Pitching to new or existing contacts at media outlets to place Reboot ideas and articles

  • Brainstorming one-on-one with colleagues to generate ideas for short-to-medium length articles or editorials based on existing or new project work

  • Working closely with the visual design team to incorporate compelling visuals (charts, photos, diagrams) into our written products

  • Collaborating with programs team members to strengthen the argument, logic, flow, or throughline of an existing report 

  • Driving efficient and collaborative editorial processes from brainstorm to proofread

  • Structural edits, line edits, and copy edits of any type of document

  • Enjoys coaching and teaching others; derives professional satisfaction from helping others achieve their writing goals.

  • Skilled, efficient, and collaborative throughout at all phases of the editing process—creating logical arguments, strengthening a narrative throughline, line editing, proofreading.


Qualifications

  • At least 8 years of professional writing and editing experience

  • Understanding of issues relevant to Reboot's work (e.g. public sector innovation and design, social justice, open government, international development)

  • Experience working with and coaching people of varying English levels and writing abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to work under tight time constraints and adjust plans in the face of changing priorities and deadlines

  • Existing networks and contacts at relevant publication outlets; and experience successfully pitching ideas for external publication (preferred)
