Reading Partners launched in 2001 with the mission to expand opportunities for children in underserved communities by fostering a lifelong love of reading, developing strong literacy skills, and building the confidence and self-esteem critical to empowerment and community development.  Reading Partners provides children with robust one-on-one reading support through a structured, research-based curriculum that engages students and provides basic building blocks to supplement their academic growth.  On average, Reading Partners students gain 1.6 months of reading skills for every month in the program.

Working in partnership with teachers, schools, and community volunteers, Reading Partners has grown from serving 100 students in 2003 in northern California with a budget of $180,000 to serving over 2,900 students in California, Washington, D.C., New York, Texas, and Maryland with a budget of almost $8M.  A recipient of significant Social Innovation Fund funding through the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation, Reading Partners has plans for continued rapid growth into other regions.  For more information about Reading Partners, please visit

How we do it:

Reading Partners seeks a dynamic Grantwriting Associate with excellent writing and communications skills. The candidate must be highly organized with the ability to implement systems and follow-up processes, effectively work under pressure, use independent judgment and produce a quality work product within tight time constraints. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who desires a long and successful career in development and fundraising with a focus on government, foundation and corporate grant writing to become involved in a rapidly growing national non-profit.

The ideal candidate will have 2-5 years of development experience preferably in a nationally scaled organization with previous experience in securing new funding opportunities; comprehensive knowledge of research, and the ability to distinguish and identify funding opportunities for special programs.  S/he will be customer service focused with a unique ability to anticipate and address issues.  S/he will have an ability to recognize, capture, and convey stories that will engage supporters and stakeholders in a meaningful way.  


The Grantwriting Associate will report to the Director of Development and will work closely with various senior leaders.


Grant Writing

  • Conducts full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals to foundations and corporate sources in existing and new regional locations.
  • Researches and identifies new government, corporate, foundations and private funding prospects.
  • Assists in generating revenues for Reading Partner programs and services through timely submission of well-researched, well written and well-documented grant/fund-raising proposals
  • Works with Finance to gather information necessary to report to funders on current grant programs

Administrative Support for the Northern California Team

  • Manage grants in the donor database and act as the quality assurance officer to ensure that information is accurately entered in the Reading Partners custom donor database and reconcile the database to financial reports on a regular basis.  
  • Work together with manager and other senior leaders to customize database to support future business development activities.
  • Update and produce regular reports on organization wide pipeline and track to national fund development goals
  • Make appointments for members of the Northern California and National team, arrange for onsite tours for supporters
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Previous fundraising experience
  • Excellent written communication skills and attention to detail
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Self-motivator and ability to operate effectively with limited direction
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and adapt to new situations
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with diverse groups
  • Deep belief in our mission


  • Background in PR or marketing
  • Experience in the fields of education or literacy


Requires prolonged sitting with some bending, stooping and stretching; eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, telephone, photocopier, calculator and other office equipment.  Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare and communicate appropriate reports.   Also requires moderate to intense concentration due to complexity and/or need to meet deadlines, and flexibility to readily adapt to a changing environment.
