Reading Partners launched in 1999 with the mission to expand opportunities for children in underserved communities by fostering a lifelong love of reading, developing strong literacy skills, and building the confidence and self-esteem critical to empowerment and community development. Reading Partners provides children with robust one-on-one reading support through a structured, research-based curriculum that engages students and provides basic building blocks to supplement their academic growth. On average, Reading Partners students gain 1.6 months of reading skills for every month in the program.
Working in partnership with teachers, schools, and community volunteers, Reading Partners has grown from serving 100 students in 2003 in northern California with a budget of $180,000 to serving over 5,000 students in California, Washington, DC, New York, Texas, Maryland, and Colorado with a budget of over $13M. As one of only a handful of nonprofits to receive two highly competitive federal Social Innovation Fund grants, Reading Partners has plans for continued rapid growth into other regions. WHAT WE DO AND HOW WE DO IT
Reading Partners is dedicated to transforming struggling young readers into confident readers who are excited about learning.
How we do it:
- Focus on children from low-income communities.
- Give one-on-one instruction at the student’s reading level.
- Recruit and train community volunteers to work with children.
- Partner with high-need elementary schools to offer an effective program on campus.
- Provide a way for volunteers to give a small amount of their time to make a huge and meaningful difference in a child’s life.
The Development Manager is based out of our Washington, DC office and works closely with the Executive Director – Mid-Atlantic to support fundraising for Reading Partners’ Washington, DC and Baltimore programming, representing an overall ~$2M budget. The Development Manager provides the primary fundraising support for the Mid-Atlantic’s ~$750K portfolio of private philanthropy, and aids the Executive Director with increasing and stewarding local individual, foundation, and corporate funders. We anticipate dedicating approximately 70% of time to Washington, DC and 30% of time to Baltimore.
This position reports to the Executive Director – Mid-Atlantic, and manages an AmeriCorps VISTA Development Engineer. The Development Manager also works closely with the national development team, Mid-Atlantic Regional Board, and Baltimore staff leaders.
Strategic Revenue Management
- Collaborate with the Executive Director to craft strategic plans for each funding stream and set measures of success to ensure that Washington, DC and Baltimore meet annual and long-term fundraising goals
- Design and execute customized donor cultivation plans to maximize the giving potential of current donors and secure new prospects.
- Prepare and support the Executive Director to execute actions in line with strategic and operational plans and monitor progress to plan (i.e., prepare meeting briefs and materials, conduct meeting downloads, prepare follow-up correspondence, track when tasks are completed, identify when tasks are overdue, etc.).
- Provide guidance and assist the Executive Director in managing and supporting the Regional Board’s fundraising, including (but not limited to) collaborating with the Executive Director and Board Chair in developing agendas for quarterly board meetings and creating meeting materials.
Managing Development Operations
- Lead all written communication to external stakeholders including: letters of intent, grants, grant reports, corporate sponsorship proposals, and customized individual donor correspondence.
- Manage an AmeriCorps VISTA Development Engineer by providing coaching and guidance on grant-writing, prospect research, compiling supplementary materials, data entry, event logistics, customizing local marketing materials, and administrative support.
- Oversee fundraising operational systems in Salesforce and provide regular reports to the Executive Director, Regional Board, and national team tracking the progress to goal and status of the moves management process.
- Plan and coordinate a potential annual large-scale fundraising event and 1-3 additional small-scale events throughout the year
- Collaborate with other staff members and provide support as needed on public funding opportunities.
- Participate in external meetings with the Executive Director, including meetings with board members, individual donors, and foundation and corporate contacts.
- Facilitate board committee meetings by preparing agendas and materials with the head of the committee.
- Occasionally lead cultivation meetings with external stakeholders.
- 3+ years of professional work experience, particularly in fund development.
- Excellent written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively, and a keen eye for copy-editing.
- Solid verbal communications skills and ability to build relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
- Demonstrated commitment to accountability, measuring outcomes, and a results-oriented culture.
- Ability to manage multiple organization systems fluidly.
- A track record of setting and achieving fundraising goals and a thorough understanding of strategies to achieve these goals within the local landscape.
- Experience working with a board of directors as a key partner in organizational advancement relationships within the corporate, public, and nonprofit sectors.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- Computer literacy: experience with fundraising databases preferred.
- Experience in the fields of education or literacy.
- Experience with high growth nonprofits.
- Experience working with Salesforce or similar CRM software.

- Ability to think analytically and problem solve, combined with a willingness to ask questions and work collaboratively.
- Energetic, hard-working, and a team player.

This position requires occasional travel throughout the Washington, DC and Baltimore areas in order to attend funder meetings, fundraising events, school site visits, and other community events. This position may also involve occasional travel to Reading Partners National Headquarters in Oakland, CA.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL & MENTAL DEMANDS
Requires prolonged sitting with some bending, stooping and stretching, eye-hand coordination, and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, telephone, photocopier, calculator and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to communicate with volunteers, funders, and staff. Also requires flexibility to readily adapt to a changing environment.
