Position: AS400 System Administrator

Duration: 12 Months +

Location: Hybrid - Cranston/Warwick,, RI.


Work Schedule:

  • Core hours: Monday – Friday, 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM EST.
  • Onsite presence required (Cranston/Warwick, RI).
  • Maximum 2 remote days per week (if approved).
  • Occasional after-hours support may be required.


Position Summary:

The State of Rhode Island ETSS/OIT is seeking an experienced IBM Power 9 iSeries / AS400 System Administrator to manage, administer, and provide ongoing support for two AS400 systems, each containing three LPARS (Production, UAT, Development).

Support for IBM Mainframe systems is a plus.

Key Responsibilities:

IBM Power 9 iSeries (AS400) Administration:

  • Maintain, upgrade, monitor, and report on all IBM iSeries systems and HMC infrastructure.
  • Manage PTFs, firmware upgrades, system backups, replication/DR processes, and database journaling.
  • Install, configure, and manage AS400 software applications and tools.
  • Configure client emulation, user profiles, devices, and update AS400 security policies.
  • Monitor system performance, job queues, job schedulers, disk space, network configurations, subsystems, and system values.
  • Perform security reviews and maintain proper user access controls.
  • Ensure robust backup and recovery processes, test restores, and document recovery plans.
  • Manage printing, output queues, and resolve spool file issues.
  • Engage with third-party vendors and support teams as needed.
  • Assist EOC operators and programmers with runtime errors.
  • Develop and maintain system documentation, SOPs, and provide operational reports.

IBM Mainframe (Support Role):

  • Assist with monitoring system performance, job queues, security, and disk space.
  • Apply patches, updates, and maintain system values for security and performance.
  • Support backup and recovery operations, verify media integrity, and assist with disaster recovery and business continuity planning.
  • Check logs (MLOG), printers, output queues, and network configurations.
  • Provide support for legacy application migration and modernization initiatives.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • 3-5+ years of experience in AS400/iSeries systems administration.
  • COBOL programming experience.
  • Proficiency with:
  • Go Anywhere Integration, ODBC, SFTP, FTP, Mocha, Rumba, Blue Zone emulation software
  • HIS systems
  • DB2, SQL, SQL/DS, VSAM databases (tables, indexes, recovery processes)
  • Familiarity with IBM OS utilities, MVS JCL, VSE JCL, Easytrieve Plus, MLOG.
  • Experience in troubleshooting, database recovery, and resolving system/application issues.
  • Knowledge of disaster recovery protocols, BCP/COOP plans.
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate with business, technical staff, and vendors.
  • Tools: XL Print Paris, MS Visio, MS Office, Teams, Jira.

Additional Preferred Skills:

  • Experience supporting IBM Mainframe systems.
  • Knowledge of modernizing legacy applications and integration.
