Plexxikon, a member of the Daiichi Sankyo Group, is a leader in the discovery and development of novel, small molecule pharmaceuticals. Plexxikon’s marketed drugs, Zelboraf™ (vemurafenib) and Turalio™ (pexidartinib) are both first-in-class transformative oncology drugs.  Plexxikon's demonstrated capability in discovery and early development positions the company to create significant value for Plexxikon, Daiichi Sankyo and its collaborators.  Plexxikon's novel discovery approach, combined with experienced management and scientific teams, a broad network of scientific and clinical experts, and partnerships supporting later stage development, have been key drivers of the company's success since it began operations in 2001.  Plexxikon is a small business with approximately 65 employees based in Berkeley, California.


We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join us to lead the Human Resources function for Plexxikon.  You will be a key member of the leadership team setting policy, overseeing recruiting, performance management, benefits administration and helping to cultivate the corporate culture. In mid-2021 the company will be relocating, which will be a significant change for the employees.  You will have an opportunity to work with the leadership team to enhance and build on the existing culture in this new space.  You will report directly to the CEO.

Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

  • Guide the overall staffing and organizational strategy for the company, while also being the primary HR resource for the organization
  • Provide hands-on recruiting support filling positions (anticipate 5-8 in a given year) to ensure that the company continues to grow efficiently while bringing on top talent
  • Manage and continue to find enhancement opportunities for the employee benefits programs 
  • Ensure compliance and legal requirements of diverse areas of HR
  • Partner with management to mitigate and/or resolve employee relations issues
  • Improve and lead the performance management programs
  • Act as coach/mentor and consultant to management and employees (especially during the performance review process)
  • Communicate company policies and provide recommendations on how to improve internal processes
  • Other duties as assigned


Position requirements & experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) required; advanced degree preferred with at least 10 years of experience in Human Resources with at least 5 years of relevant experience in a pharmaceutical or biotechnology company
  • PHR or SPHR certification a plus 
  • Proven leadership and team building experience
  • Willingness to think outside the box and adapt best practices to our small, but changing environment
  • Elegant approach to employee relations issues with a strong understanding of the importance of confidentiality
  • Success in bringing on top talent with hands-on recruitment
  • Skilled in organizing and prioritizing competing time demands with exceptional attention-to-detail 
  • Self-motivated with a strong sense of ownership in areas of responsibility
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills 
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S.
