Software Project Manager to support PARC's Project Management Organization

 

Position Description:

PARC has recently established a Project Manager role to help support our active research teams with the planning, execution, and control of their projects.  We’re seeking to hire an additional Project Manager with a background in software development.

 

This position fulfills a critical cross-functional role to drive project planning and execution in partnership with PARC’s world-class research scientists. The Project Manager will work as a project management expert in project planning and execution, deliverable tracking and integration, costing and financial reporting, risk management, and customer coordination. 

 

As we deploy this new business function into the unique PARC research environment, we are continuously experimenting and adapting project management best practices to fit our culture and deliver improved performance and efficiency.  As specific practices demonstrate their value, we are then incorporating them into our project management baseline, institutionalizing them through investment in supporting processes and tools.  Candidates must be able to operate in a loosely structured environment, working collaboratively with research leads to creatively identify value-added approaches, but then must transition to development of more formalized methods. 

 

The right personality will be a key factor for selection.  The Project Manager will be in a supporting role to our research Principal Investigators, who own project execution, but yet the Project Manager must be able to exert influence as a respected authority on project management practices.  Personality will also be critical to enable the Project Manager to serve as an integrated point of contact for some of PARC’s largest corporate clients, providing over-arching visibility across sets of parallel projects.  Candidates must have the ability to develop trusted relationships with these clients, confidently keep tabs on the status of a complex set of technical activities, and positively represent PARC at all times.

Roles and Responsibilities:

 

  • Support project research leads in close partnership to develop and deliver high-value and high-impact advanced technologies.

  • Manage varied software development tools and practices (Agile processes, code repositories, collaboration tools, etc.)

  • Own PARC’s project planning, costing, forecasting, status tracking, and risk management processes.

  • Work as part of the project management team to develop PARC-specific project management practices, including conducting experiments, collecting data, developing tools and processes, and managing deployments.

  • Coordinate across the company to provide information, resolve issues, eliminate barriers, and optimize resources for project execution.

  • Contribute to completion of non-technical deliverables.

  • Manage internal and external project stakeholders, including serving as a customer-facing point of contact.

  • Conduct project performance reviews to provide team and management visibility on progress and risks.

  • Develop and enforce use of standardized processes, procedures, and templates across the organization once adopted.

  • Train and motivate research staff on project management best practices.


 

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in science or technology field of study – PARC does highly technical work across a broad range of subjects, and our Project Managers must be able to interface with our researchers at a reasonable level of depth.

  • Demonstrated familiarity with project management methodologies and principles required; PMP or equivalent certification preferred.

  • Specific experience with modern software development practices and tools.PARC’s research environment does not have a single standard software development methodology, so flexibility and broad experience are key.

  • Some experience in project management, including project design, financial analysis, project reporting, and risk management.No specific number of years required- we are interested in early-career candidates with the right background and personality, as well as mid-career candidates with proven project management experience.

  • Government and Commercial project management experience a plus.

  • Proficiency in MS Office (Excel power-users always loved), MS Project, SharePoint, and Deltek financial systems a plus.

  • Personality – must have the right balance of being able to operate successfully in a supporting role to research scientists, while holding their own as respected project management experts.

  • Demonstrated experience holding key-customer facing roles is highly-advantageous.

  •  Must have an exacting sense of polish to ensure that all personal and project deliverables are  of impeccable quality.
