About the Job


PARC's Innovation Services Group is looking for a dynamic design/experience researcher to work with PARC UX designers, technology researchers and software and hardware development teams and conduct a range of UX research for a wide range of Fortune 500 clients. You'll work on teams with designers and technologists to explore the impact of new technologies for our clients. Because of the exploratory nature of PARC's work, our user research ranges from formative to evaluative, and from ethnography to usability, and many things in between. Our ideal candidate is comfortable with a range of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, mixing methods as needed and working on multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, agile environment. For this position, we are open to a range of expertise and backgrounds, from qualitative specialists to methodological generalists, with broad skills in qualitative and design research methods and an understanding of quantitative concepts. This position is based in our Palo Alto office.



Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with stakeholder teams to identify research topics
  • Plan, manage and execute UX studies that address user attitudes and behavior
  • Generate insights that fuel ideation and evaluate design concepts
  • Independently plan and conduct research using a wide variety of qualitative and quantitative methods from ethnographic field observation to the occasional survey
  • Work cross-functionally with user experience and service designers, research scientists, technologists, marketing, software developers and hardware engineers
  • Recruit participants and field sites by the project scope and objectives, working through client contacts or with outside recruiting agencies[
  • Schedule travel to field sites and manage all project costs per scope and approved budget[
  • Present research plans to PARC's Institutional Review Board for approval
  • Creatively communicate results and deliver high-quality research reports and deliverables
  • Mentor junior UX Researchers and UX Designers on the team within and across active projects (up to 20% of time)
  • Participate in and support revenue generating activities, including client-facing discussions and negotiations around funded project work (up to 20% of time)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in user research, qualitative marketing research, or a human behavior related field (HCI, Psychology, Social Science, Information Science, etc.); Ph.D. degree preferred
  • 8+ years experience in applied user field research
  • 4+ years of conducting commercial UX research
  • 4+ years of client-facing experience
  • Active listening, observation, and analytical skills
  • Command of a broad set of qualitative and quantitative user research methods
  • Ability to ask, as well as answer, meaningful and impactful questions
  • Excellent project management skills (scheduling, organizing, risk management, problem-solving)
  • Excellent multi-tasking and time management skills
  • Ability to be self-motivated and independent, as well as the capacity to flourish in an ambiguous or under-specified work context while creating substantial value for our clients and PARC
  • Ability to travel domestically 10-30% is required; ability to travel out-of-country strongly preferred
  • Comfort participating in research that spans a variety of technical backgrounds, from chemistry and nanotechnology to conversational AI and geometric reasoning

    • data science for business intelligence
    • office and workplace practices
  • 3+ years project management/coordination experience (multiple concurrent project experience strongly preferred)
  • 3+ years of working in a corporate or large-business environment
  • Ability to work with video a plus but not mandatory
  • Experience working in multi-cultural or cross-cultural contexts
  • Experience mentoring or managing small teams is strongly desired
