Research Associate - Printing / Process Development

A current PhD student, M.S. student, or senior-level undergraduate in materials science, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering or a related discipline.
The Hardware Systems Laboratory at the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) is seeking an exceptional student for a one year term research associate (RA) position to help accelerate the development of a novel co-extrusion manufacturing technology. Utilizing different ink formulations, process methods and metrology tools, the RA will help characterize the printability and performance of structures fabricated with the PARC co-extrusion technology. Co-extrusion has been used to produce functional structures for both electrochemical energy storage and photovoltaic applications. The RA will be expected to help advance and extend the co-extrusion technology for energy related applications.
RAs will gain experience in a diverse range of fields and have the opportunity to patent and publish papers. The successful candidate will have exceptional “hands-on” experimental skills in addition to a strong analytical background. The focus of this position will be on analyzing experimental results in detail, looking for trends to create process recommendations, optimizing printed structures, and assembling battery test cells. Additional design and modeling work may also be involved depending on the candidate’s interests and skill set.
- Currently a senior-level undergraduate, MS, or PhD student enrolled in an academic program of study
- Ability to work for 1 year
- Background in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science, and/or chemistry (Exceptional students in other related fields are still encouraged to apply)
- Prior coursework and hands-on laboratory experience in printing processes, chemistry, materials science, electrochemistry and/or fluid mechanics
- Ability to work independently
- Basic competency with Solidworks, MS Excel, and Matlab
- Experience with fluid characterization, rheology, and colloidal science
