About the Job:

Graduate students interested in obtainingindustry experience for 6 to 9 months are encouraged to apply, with preferencegiven to those available immediately. Interns participating in this projectwill gain experience in a diverse range of fields, including optical sensing,optoelectronics, grid electrical systems, mechanical engineering, materialsscience, data analysis and machine learning algorithms.

Interns are fully integrated into the dailyactivities of PARC's highly collaborative, multidisciplinary culture and havethe opportunity to work with leading researchers, engage in different stages ofthe research or business-development pipeline, and receive authorship onpublications and/or patents.

Real-world LearningOpportunities:

  • Assist in the development of  embedded fiber-optic sensors for monitoring transformer parameters
  • Assist in the development and  fabrication of readout units for fiber optic sensing
  • Design and develop experimental setups and characterization tests
  • Perform laboratory investigations and data collection
  • Assist in data analysis and cost-performance modeling


  • Background in optical engineering, optoelectronics, materials science, electrical, or mechanical engineering (Exceptional students in other related fields are encouraged to apply if  they have a strong relevant background)
  • Experience with common electrical measurement instruments and lab equipment, such as multi-meter, oscilloscope and power supplies  
  • Should have completed at least 1 year of graduate study
  • Familiar with safety requirements  and practices in a lab
  • Prior experience with optical sensing instruments and/or battery characterization is a plus
