Job Description

Intelligent Modeling and Intervention for Mobile-Supported Health Behavior Change - Interactive Intelligence Area (I2 Area)

About Us:

The new Interactive Intelligence Area (I2 Area) at PARC is seeking exceptional candidates to perform foundational research in support of a novel intelligent coaching system for behavior change in health. This is part of new 48-month project, funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health, that will support the testing and development of a smartphone-based/group-based, system called Fittle+ to help people achieve and maintain healthy behavior changes in diet and physical activity. Fittle+ will be tested and developed in collaboration with a world-renowned health provider organization. A major component of the Fittle+ project is research on computational models capable of predicting how coaching interventions and group interactions influence individual changes in behavior. This will require integration of theories from individual health behavior, computational cognitive psychology, computational models of online social interaction, and adaptive treatment systems to develop fine-grained predictive models of behavior change, and adaptive messaging and interventions. A key aspect of this position is to manage the daily data collection activities for the deployed experiments, participate and generate new ideas in the evaluation of the data, and collaborate on the continuous, experimental evaluation of applied behavior change theories in the field.

Ideal candidates will have a strong background in human experimental studies with a Ph.D. in Computer Science, although candidates in fields such as Cognitive Science, Psychology, Statistics, or Information Science who have strong experience in computational models will be considered. The ideal candidate will have performed research in applied (i.e., using real, not synthetic data) machine learning, user modeling, adaptive treatment systems, cognitive modeling, intelligent user interfaces, tutoring systems, or related fields that involve analysis, modeling, and prediction of human behavior.

Candidates must have excellent interpersonal, writing and research skills, strong time management and organizational skills, the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines and work both independently and as a member of the multidisciplinary research team. We seek researchers who passionately want to have an impact that improves peoples’ lives.
