Natural Language Generation Internship


PARC's Interaction and Analytics Lab is offering an internship related to an on-going project that requires the generation of text documents using modeling and techniques from Natural Language Generation. The focus of the effort is on generating the text of business documents. The project includes general NLG techniques plus

  • analyzing the information content in an initial corpus to identify informational elements
  • structuring target documents to convey information appropriately
  • establishing goals for the system and evaluating how well the system meets those goals

Candidates must have experience with text summarization or generation that incorporates planning content, structuring documents, aggregating sources of information and determining appropriate referring expressions.

Responsibilities include:

  • Create NLG system serving as both an authoring aid and generator of routine boilerplate sections of documents
  • Develop computational models of language that is readable and appropriate for the domain
  • Prepare training and testing data
  • Work with other researchers to understand and integrate with the overall system


  • Ph.D. candidate in computer science
  • Experience in machine learning, text analysis, and NLG
  • Experience in algorithm design and modeling
  • Programming skills in Java, Python, or similar language
