Chief Scientist – Prognostics and Health Management

PARC is incubating a new software venture in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) space, based on industry-leading technology developed at PARC. Building on the work conducted by a world-class group of scientists and engineers with decades of experience in system health management, the new venture has ambitions to redefine how industrial equipment is managed.

We are looking for an experienced scientist to join the new venture as Chief Scientist. Reporting to the technical lead of the venture, the Chief Scientist will be responsible for guiding the development of state-of-the-art health management approaches for anomaly detection and remaining useful life estimation of industrial assets. In this role, the Chief Scientist is expected to work closely with a team of senior scientists who are among the best in their respective fields. The Chief Scientist would also serve as the Line Manager for these scientists. Given the seniority of team members, the Chief Scientist needs to lead through thought leadership and principled scientific discussions. To that end, it is imperative that the Chief Scientist be widely recognized in the fields of diagnostics, prognostics, and system health management as evidenced by scientific publications, lectures, and other activities in the scientific community. Furthermore, the Chief Scientist needs to be knowledgeable of recent advances in the field, including both data-driven and model-based approaches.

Responsibilities of the Chief Scientist include oversight of the design and development of a library of modular, reusable models and algorithms focusing on fundamental fault modes and their manifestation in specific types of equipment. Depending on target equipment, required models may include mechanical, thermal, electromagnetic, chemical, or fluidic models. Algorithmic approaches may include various data-driven techniques such as neural networks, deep learning, kernel methods, and the like. The Chief Scientist needs to provide guidance to other senior scientists based on data and best practices rather than personal preferences for certain approaches.

The Chief Scientist will be responsible for acquiring data sets for the development and validation of diagnostic and prognostic approaches. To that end, the ideal candidate would have experience with design and operation of testbeds as well as end-to-end data collection and information processing for industrial assets including sensor selection, sensor placement, sensor validation, feature extraction, data collection, data reduction, data processing, and communication of results to end users.

The science team is expected to adhere to disciplined coding guidelines and styles so that the solutions are maximally robust to variations to input, system design, and similar so they can be scaled across different deployment environments. The Chief Scientist would enforce these requirements using appropriate systems engineering tools.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Manage a team of scientists as their Line Manager, including guidance for their personal and professional development, performance reviews, recruitment, and other relevant human resource activities as required
  • Generate, review, prioritize, and manage a development agenda for the science team
  • Provide individual scientific guidance to all model and algorithm development efforts
  • Procure, obtain, or develop approaches to collect relevant data sets from industrial equipment for training and validation purposes
  • Develop validation plans for models and algorithms developed by the science team
  • Articulate requirements and contribute to the design of suitable hardware testbeds in order to test and validate degradation modes for selected equipment
  • Manage hardware-in-the-loop testing and data collection efforts including design and development of experiments
  • Work cross functionally with key stakeholders in engineering, product management, and business development to help prioritize the activities of the science team.
  • Develop and refine the science roadmap to guide the science team’s short-term and long-term efforts.
  • Contribute to the venture’s leadership activities such as the assessment of the competitive landscape, give feedback on strategic direction, and on both short-term and long-term procurement decisions.


  • PhD degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, ...) or Applied Physics from a recognized university
  • 10+ years of experience working as an applied Research Scientist designing and employing models and algorithms for diagnostics and prognostics of industrial equipment
  • International recognition as a leader in the fields of diagnostics, prognostics, and systems health management
  • Experience as leader of various research projects – track record of delivering mature component degradation models and algorithms
  • Excellent communication skills – must be able to articulate analyses and methodologies clearly and communicate insights in an accessible way to team members
  • Must be able to conceive of solutions that have not been already defined
  • Experience working with large real-time data streams



  • Experience with industrial environments
  • Experience with simulation/modeling languages such as Matlab/Simulink or Modelica.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages, preferably Python
  • Experience leading a multi-cultural, geographically dispersed team
  • Experience working in a software product environment including familiarity with collaborative software development tools and practices (CI/CD tools, automated testing, source control systems)
  • Experience working with distributed technologies (REST, web services, Web API, microservices, etc.)
  • Experience with industrial controls
