OnRobot A/S was formed by Enrico Krog Iverson, the former CEO of the industry-leading collaborative robot, Universal Robots, to address the next challenge in automation, End-of-Arm Tooling. OnRobot A/S is the merger of three companies On Robot (Odense), OptoForce (Budapest), and Perception Robotics (Los Angeles) to create a global leader in robotic grippers and sensors.

This role is for the Los Angeles location that focuses on the development of bio-inspired robot hands.  OnRobot Los Angeles currently develops two unique technologies: 1) Gecko Gripper that mimics the gecko foot with a unique dry adhesive technology that is used as a robust, low-energy way to griping large, flat objects like solar panels and 2) Polyskin that is a pressure sensitive polymeric “robot skin” that creates an affordable and durable force-controlled gripper for handling a wide variety of fragile and uniquely shaped objects. OnRobot Los Angeles currently works out of the Los Angeles Clean Tech Incubator in the Arts District in Downtown Los Angeles.

EDUCATION:           BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering required                                 

OVERVIEW:       

This is a great opportunity to lead the mechanical design of innovative robotic grippers at a rapidly growing company. We are seeking a candidate who has demonstrated expertise in designing and manufacturing precision, complex electromechanical assemblies and taking products from concept to production. A successful candidate will be experienced leading a multidisciplinary team to build great products. As the company is at a rapid growth stage, the candidate will have the opportunity to become a key employee and grow together with the company.

Responsibilities:                                 

  • Lead engineer responsible for the overall mechanical design of new and existing robotic gripper products
  • Design complex mechanical components and systems for industrial automation and robotic gripper systems that include motors, gearboxes, sensors, PCBs, and custom connectors.
  • Ability to take the product through the full product development cycle from concept to product with strong prototyping and testing capability
  • Design for low volume-high mix product and ability to drive cost-effective manufacturing methods based on the scale of products, life cycle, and volume
  • Work closely with the manufacturing team to provide detailed drawings and assembly procedures for part fabrication, supply chain, and assembly
  • Validate performance and reliability of prototypes and production samples
  • Lead our mechanical design team in product development, managing projects, and meeting milestones and deliverables
  • Recruit and manage a small team of engineers, technicians, and interns

Requirements:

  • 7+ years of relevant mechanical engineering experience
  • Proficient in CAD/CAM packages (SolidWorks is preferred)
  • BOM management, sourcing, and procurement
  • Experience using and managing PDM
  • Ability to design mechanical fixtures and test apparatus
  • Strong analytical and communication skills
  • Experience with developing design drawings and specifications for machined parts and custom manufactured components
  • Experience with a wide variety of manufacturing and fabrication processes (CNC machining, injection molding, die cast, 3D printing, rubber casting, and molding)
  • Determine required tolerances using GD&T and produce drawings for release to suppliers
  • Experience with running FEA at part and system level
  • Demonstrated successful project management in product commercialization
  • Experience with ECO’s, process documentation and creating operating instructions
  • Able to understand and apply industry standards (CE, UL)
