About Us

One Common Unity (OCU) breaks cycles of violence and builds compassionate, healthy communities through the transformative power of music, arts, and peace education. Founded in 2000 following a string of school shootings in Washington, DC, OCU is a collaborative effort between educators, artists, and health practitioners dedicated to preventing violence and improving life outcomes for youth and families. Currently based in 23 schools throughout Washington, DC, we train the next generation of youth leaders in social emotional literacy, arts expression, and conflict transformation and support them to create positive social change and healing in their communities. Over the past 19 years, we have impacted over 32,500 youth and families, trained over 11,500 teachers, hosted over 81 public concerts and performances, and recently were awarded the Mayor’s Arts Award for Excellence in the Humanities.

About You

We are looking for an experienced Nonprofit Operations Associate: a natural multi-tasker who loves variety.  The ideal candidate is interested in working across several departments including HR, payroll,  and operations and is committed to One Common Unity’s mission. You have:

  • An undergraduate degree or equivalent experience

  • 3+ years of nonprofit operations experience

  • General knowledge of HR administration

  • Payroll processing experience

  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to prioritize and multitask

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Deadline and detail-oriented

  • Strong entrepreneurial spirit and willingness to take on new tasks and work flexibly

  • Problem-solver and self-starter, with strong time management skills

  • Strong attention to detail and desire for feedback

About the Job

Reporting to the Managing Director, this position is full-time.  While this position is currently virtual, it will eventually be based in our Washington, DC offices.

  • Operations, Coordination & Communications (60%)

    • Manage internal communications program including regular staff updates and all-hands meeting agendas + programming

    • Manage office infrastructure including offices supplies and vendor contacts

    • Update website content

    • Create and coordinate consultant agreements 

    • Coordinate services of  IT consultant

    • Recommend and coordinate approval of purchases and/or purchase equipment and subscriptions

    • Set up staff email, Zoom, and time tracking accounts

    • Issue and track staff equipment

    • Liaise with law firms as directed for pro bono services

    • Coordinate GSA enrollment and support contracting process (to become government contractor)

    • Providing support as needed for Senior Staff 

    • Coordinate intern program

    • Coordinate volunteer program

    • Serve as point of contact for Wellness Committee and Affinity Groups

    • Administrative duties as needed including file maintenance

  • HR (30%)

    • Staff point of contact

    • Coordinate orientation

    • Coordinate approval and reimbursement for professional development

    • Track professional development and CEU costs through payroll system

    • Manage off-boarding

    • Create and route action forms

  • Payroll and Leave Tracking (10%)

    • Set up new employees in payroll

    • Attach employees to leave profile in payroll system

    • Run semi-monthly payroll

Physical Requirement of the Job

The environmental factors and/or physical requirements of this position include the following: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have mobility sufficient to work onsite and move around the work space. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard. The employee frequently is required to be in one position for long periods of screen use, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear both in person and over devices.  The employee interacts in close spaces and frequently with other workers, vendors, and clients.  The position works in an office environment with artificial light and air.
