ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND
One Common Unity (OCU) breaks cycles of violence and builds compassionate, healthy communities through the transformative power of music, arts, and peace education. Founded in 2000 following a string of school shootings in Washington, DC, OCU is a collaborative effort between educators, artists, and health practitioners dedicated to preventing violence and improving life outcomes for youth and families. Currently based in 23 schools throughout Washington, DC, we train the next generation of youth leaders in social emotional literacy, arts expression, and conflict transformation and support them to create positive social change and healing in their communities. Over the past 19 years, we have impacted over 32,500 youth and families, trained over 11,500 teachers, hosted over 81 public concerts and performances, and recently were awarded the Mayor’s Arts Award for Excellence in the Humanities.
ABOUT THE POSITION
We seek an experienced Human Resources professional or team to provide consistent and ongoing engagement with our staff to support a variety of human resources needs and ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
As an independent contractor the hours and volume of work will vary.
HUMAN RESOURCES CONSULTANT

Benefit Management:
Administer benefit plans including medical and dental, flexible spending accounts, retirement accounts, employee assistance programs, and other, with assistance of the Director of Finance
Announce open enrollment periods and support employees with individual issues
Provide quarterly communications on benefits and how to maximize
Conduct quarterly hours audits for eligibility
Hold an annual brown bag on 401(k) benefits
Conduct annual fiduciary meeting for 401(k)

Continue special leave and accommodation administration
Support and documentation of any DC PFL, ADA, Worker’s Compensation or other situations outside of standard sick/vacation
As needed, support Operations Associate with leave tracking

Payroll:
As needed, assist the Director of Finance to process payroll in a timely manner;

Hiring and Onboarding:
Draft and coordinate automated employee offer letters and consultant agreements
Ensure positions are graded fairly and equitably based on the market data
Implement recruitment policies and procedures that align with OCU diversity and inclusion policies and procedures
Collaborate with Operations Associate to lead the development of a robust onboarding process for new hires that aligns with organizational culture and values
Provide automated on-boarding paperwork
As needed, coordination verification of mental health licensure and other documentation
Support new employee culture orientation

Employee Records Management:
Administer, submit and file all hiring paperwork for new employees (or employees with a change in employment status, ex. contractor to employee)
Maintain Employee Records/Paperwork (leave balances, timesheets, offer letters, employee communication, updates to contracts, etc.)

Employee Reviews:
Schedule 90 day reviews for new employees, annual reviews for all staff, and additional reviews as needed on an employee by employee basis

Personnel decisions (e.g., Termination/Transition):
Support decision-making and assist in the documentation of employee personnel decisions

Define Policies and Procedures:
Update Personnel Manual as needed
Stay up to date on all HR policies, programs, and practices to stay abreast of current trends within the industry
Ensure that all recruitment policies and procedures align with OCU diversity and inclusion policies and procedures

Advice and Coaching:
Advise, as appropriate, staff and the Senior Leadership Team on HR issues;
Advise the Board, as requested, on various issues
Provide training to staff and consultants, as needed support staff in best-practices

Employee engagement
Respond to or coordinate response to employee inquiries
Meet with all departments and have regular check ins/attend regular meetings
Training and coaching for supervisors
Working with the EAP to provide mental wellness and other brown bag sessions
Engage with high potential employees to ensure engagement
Support supervisors early and often with any employee relations issues
Facilitate yearly employee satisfaction surveys

Employee Needs and Grievances:
Address employee needs on an ongoing basis, including a consistent "temperature check"
Receive and address employee grievances on an as-needed basis

Support for return to workplace planning
Culturally sensitive polls, focus groups to make sure people are ready, willing, and able to move back to an in-person work model once vaccines have been delivered
Coordination with partner schools and programs, if applicable
Help with a company policy regarding any requirement for vaccine / disclosure
