One Common Unity (OCU) breaks cycles of violence and builds compassionate, healthy communities through the transformative power of music, arts, and peace education. Founded in 2000 following a string of school shootings in Washington, DC, OCU is a collaborative effort between educators, artists, and health practitioners dedicated to preventing violence and improving life outcomes for youth and families. Currently based in 23 schools throughout Washington, DC, we train the next generation of youth leaders in social emotional literacy, arts expression, and conflict transformation and support them to create positive social change and healing in their communities. Over the past 19 years, we have impacted over 32,500 youth and families, trained over 11,500 teachers, hosted over 81 public concerts and performances, and recently were awarded the Mayor’s Arts Award for Excellence in the Humanities.
This position reports and works closely with the Development Director. The Development Associate will work to assist with all tasks that will support the organization’s development efforts and expand the organization’s impact.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Assist with grant process, including grant research, writing, and copy-editing;
Draft LOIs, grant applications, budgets, and grant attachments;
Develop and manage timelines for grant writing to ensure development goals are met and critical fundraising processes are carried out in a timely manner;
Support the development of corporate sponsorships and garner corporate support for projects and programs.
Support the Development Director in individual donor cultivation, communication and retention efforts;
Support direct mail and email fundraising campaigns as needed;
Issue donor receipts as needed.
Manage utilization and integration of Salesforce;
Use CRM system to track and report on fundraising goals.
Work with the Board Fundraising Committee, Leadership Council, and development staff to organize and carry out fundraising events;
Alongside Operations Manager, manage Development Interns and Fellows;
Other as needed.
Associates Degree/Bachelor's Degree with a focus on development or a relevant subject preferred;
A commitment to and understanding of One Common Unity’s mission, including an understanding of the role that education and the arts can play in social change;
A commitment to social justice, racial justice, experience with cultural humility, and comfort working with people from diverse backgrounds/different from oneself;
Outstanding interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills;
Attention to detail;
Willingness to learn about foundation grantmaking and government contracting processes;
Ability to integrate feedback from multiple stakeholders;
Proven ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative connections with individuals from diverse backgrounds including colleagues, community members, volunteers, program participants, and donors;
Personal qualities of emotional maturity, humility, strong work ethic, and a roll-up-my-sleeves attitude;
Familiarity with database systems and online social networks; experience with Salesforce and Mailchimp a plus.
