HandUp Detroit is Hiring our First Engineer!

South Oakland Shelter is looking for a part-time Full Stack Software Engineer to work directly on our HandUp Detroit project, a web-based fundraising platform that helps nonprofits raise money for homeless neighbors in need. Working on HandUp Detroit, you’ll have the satisfaction of seeing your work directly impact thousands of lives.

As an experienced generalist, you will be responsible for keeping the HandUp Detroit platform running on a 10-hour a month contract. Ideal candidates would reside in the Detroit area, though we are open to accepting remote applicants. Working knowledge of all levels of database-driven web applications is essential.



  • Implement minor feature enhancements and improve codebase

  • Fix any bugs and resolve site outages in a timely manner

  • Administer hosting infrastructure, servers and databases

  • Work independently and make self-guided decisions

  • Testing and deploying updates


Required skills:

  • Python & Flask

  • Experience writing SQL queries

  • Frontend: HTML, CSS (Sass), JavaScript (jQuery), Bootstrap

  • Ability to independently explore and understand an existing large codebase

  • Ability to communicate effectively with a non-technical audience on technical matters
