About SOS:

Since 1985, South Oakland Shelter (SOS) has been at the forefront of addressing the myriad needs of homeless and displaced persons throughout Metro Detroit. SOS implements housing-first programming, operates an emergency shelter, and provides various supportive services that move people from homelessness to long-term stability. SOS also develops and operates affordable and supportive housing, and administers HandUp for 100+ homeless service agencies and their clients across the United States. Our mission is to build communities that end homelessness.

HandUp is a crowdfunding platform for people experiencing homelessness and poverty. Through HandUp, the community can donate directly to specific people and organizations fundraising for basic needs like housing, clothing, and medical care. Job Specifics:

SOS is seeking a Director to lead HandUp, our web-based fundraising community and platform that helps nonprofits throughout the United States raise money for homeless neighbors in need. Leading the HandUp initiative, you’ll have the satisfaction of seeing your work directly impact thousands of lives.

We are looking for someone with experience in leading an innovative initiative who has the passion and drive to take HandUp to the next level. Additional duties would include overseeing fundraising and partnerships, managing marketing and PR campaigns, and supporting existing nonprofits using the HandUp platform. This is a dynamic, intrapreneurial role which will also touch aspects of design and operations to keep the HandUp platform running effectively.

Responsibilities include:

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the HandUp platform

  • Support and cultivate current nonprofit partners using HandUp in an effort to improve and expand their usage

  • Recruit and develop new nonprofit HandUp partners across the U.S.

  • Help build regional collaborative groups of HandUp nonprofits similar to HandUp Detroit

  • Lead marketing, growth, and product planning in collaboration with SOS’s leadership team

  • Raise funds for platform growth through grants, corporate partnerships, and other strategies

  • Public speaking at conferences and various PR opportunities

  • Present HandUp story to new cities, partners, etc.

Required skills:

  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once

  • Ability to prioritize opportunities

  • Ability to work independently and also collaborate with other departments

  • Comfort with both higher level strategic planning as well as administrative tasks

  • Experience with online fundraising and storytelling preferred

  • Experience in a nonprofit, social enterprise, or startup environment preferred


Bachelor’s Degree (BA/BS) from an accredited college or university in a related field or equivalent work experience preferred.
