The International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Global TIES for Children at New York University have launched an ambitious new initiative aimed at improving the quality of education and children’s learning in crisis-affected countries, “Education in Emergencies: Evidence for Action” (3EA).
The 3EA initiative will implement a set of contextually appropriate, low-cost interventions targeted at improving children’s stress, executive functioning, and basic literacy skills in three emergency contexts: Lebanon, with Syrian refugee children; Niger, with refugee and internally displaced children fleeing Boko Haram; and Sierra Leone, with children affected by the Ebola crisis. We will then rigorously evaluate the interventions in order to generate actionable evidence on the following research questions:
Which interventions most effectively improve primary school-aged children’s literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional learning (SEL) outcomes in emergency contexts? What are the pathways of influence through which these programs operate? For which populations, at what cost, and under what circumstances are interventions feasible and most effective?
The Project Assistant will be responsible for assisting the Project Director and TIES Associate Director for Research in Conflict-Affected Countries with literature review, data collection preparation, data management support tasks.
This is a part-time position (15-20 hours per week) paid on an hourly basis.
The position includes providing research support for several activities, including: organizing an formatting data collection materials, reports, publication child and teachers’ outcomes and educational settings; data collection activities, including programming tablets for data collection; data cleaning, organization, analysis and interpretation; and writing up of project findings into reports and academic journal articles.
The Project Assistant will report to the TIES Associate Director for Research in Conflict-Affected Countries and is responsible for assisting with the following:
- Supporting data management and cleaning
- Formatting documents for publication and reports
- Conducting literature reviews
- If French or Arabic fluent, assisting with translation and interpretation of materials
- Other administrative/research support duties as needed
The candidate must be working towards an undergraduate degree in developmental science, human development, educational psychology, international education, international development, applied statistics, or a related social science field. Ability to work well independently and in a multidisciplinary, multi-country team; excellent organization skills and attention to detail; and excellent oral and written communication skills necessary. Working knowledge and experience in formatting and working with documents in MS Office Word and Excel, and excellent oral and written communication skills are required. Relevant analytic skills, including experience cleaning, organizing, and describing data in STATA or R software, is preferred. French or Arabic proficiency is desirable.
