Fiber Optic Technician

Job Description

We are hire for a Fiber Optic Technician! This role is responsible for installing, maintaining, testing, and troubleshooting fiber optic cable systems, which are critical for high-speed internet, telephone, and data transmission services.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Installing and splicing fiber optic cables in complex environments (e.g., enterprise networks, data centers, or telecom facilities).
  • Testing fiber optic lines for performance and signal loss using advanced tools like OTDRs.
  • Identifying and troubleshooting performance issues, including poor signal quality, network outages, or physical damage to fiber cables.
  • Managing fiber optic projects or installations, coordinating with engineers, and sometimes leading a small team of junior technicians.

Skills/Abilities:

The skills needed include proper handling and installing of fiber optic cables, understanding fiber optic systems, and basic testing techniques.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Specialized training in fiber optic splicing, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of advanced equipment and tools like OTDR, fusion splicers, and power meters.
  • Vendor-Specific Training (e.g., Corning, CommScope) or advanced certifications like CFOS/T (Certified Fiber Optic Specialist in Testing) or CFOS/S (Certified Fiber Optic Specialist in Splicing).

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to work in various environments, including outdoor and indoor installations.
  • Travel to job sites required, occasional overnight stays.
  • Physically demanding work climbing ladders, lifting equipment, working in ceilings and other tight spaces.
  • Collaboration with other trades (electricians, IT teams, general contractors), as needed.
