About the Job:
Working at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, the Social Media Special Assistant will be part of the effort to increase our social media presence across various platforms. This individual will assist in developing and executing strategic communication strategies to drive public awareness and encourage future museum visits while also maintaining support and partnerships.
Location/Schedule:
Fully in-person: This is an in-person position located at 1775 Semper Fidelis Way, Triangle, VA 22172. The position may require evening and weekend shifts that vary from week to week. This position is limited to 29 hours per week with a term not to exceed three years.
Responsibilities:
Content Creation & Curation:
- Draft high-quality, engaging content (e.g., writing copy and creating graphics & videos) for social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, etc.
- Support the Public Affairs Chief in planning and scheduling content using social media management tools such as Hootsuite.
- Contribute to developing ideas for new campaigns or content series that align with the organization’s objectives.
- Assist with producing e-newsletters and making updates to a website.
- Photograph events and artifacts as needed.
Community Management:
- Monitor comments and engage with followers to build an active online community.
- Monitor social media channels for relevant conversations and industry trends and participate in relevant collaborations.
- Draft responses to queries in a timely manner and monitor reviews.
Analytics & Reporting:
- Help track and analyze social media performance using tools like, Hootsuite, HubSpot or native platform analytics.
- Assist in preparing weekly/monthly reports with insights and recommendations for improving performance.
- Monitor competitors and industry trends to adapt strategies accordingly.
Other Duties:
- Assist with annual social media planning and content calendars.
- Support the Public Affairs Chief with various tasks as needed.
Requirements:
Qualifications:
- Familiarity with social media management tools (e.g., Hootsuite and HubSpot)
- Experience with content creation (blogs, caption writing, videos, etc.)
- Familiarity with social media analytics tools
- Strong written and visual communication skills
- Understanding of social media platforms, trends, and best practices
- Photography, video editing skills
- Detail-oriented, organized, and capable of managing multiple tasks
Required skills:
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with editing software such as Adobe Photoshop, Canva, or similar.
- Experience with website management.

Environment and Physical Conditions:
The environmental factors and/or physical requirements of this position include the following: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10-20 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard and various camera and video equipment. The employee frequently is required to be in one position for long periods of screen use, reach with hands and arms, and talk and hear both in person and over devices. The employee interacts in close spaces and frequently with other workers and museum visitors. Many situations will require speaking or interviewing other workers or museum visitors. The position works in an office environment with artificial light and air.
