Special Assistant: Exhibit Lighting

Job Description

About the Job:

Working at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, the Exhibit Lighting Special Assistant will support the installation, maintenance, and adjustment of lighting for exhibitions, galleries, and temporary shows. Working closely with the Exhibits department, this role ensures that the NMMC galleries are presented in optimal lighting conditions that are both visually impactful and conservation-appropriate.

Location/Schedule:

Fully in-person: This is an in-person position located at 1775 Semper Fidelis Way, Triangle, VA 22172.

This position is limited to 29 hours per week with a term not to exceed three years.

Responsibilities:

  • Install, adjust, and focus lighting fixtures in galleries under supervision of the Exhibit Lighting Specialist.
  • Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of lighting equipment to ensure optimal performance and safety.
  • Maintain accurate records of lighting plans, equipment use, and maintenance schedules.
  • Operate lifts, ladders, and other equipment safely in compliance with OSHA regulations and museum safety standards.
  • Accomplish all tasks appropriately assigned or requested

Requirements:

Education/Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree in lighting design, theatrical production, museum studies, or related field preferred.
  • 1–2 years of experience in lighting installation or a related technical field; experience in museums or galleries is a strong plus.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Technological Skills:

  • Familiarity with theatrical or architectural lighting systems (e.g., ETC, Paradigm, DMX control systems).
  • Basic computer networking, Microsoft Office, CAD

Other:

  • Comfortable working at heights and in dimly lit or tight spaces.
  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity for handling small equipment and light calibration.
  • Comfortable working on ladders, scaffolds, or aerial lifts.

Environment and Physical Conditions:

The environmental factors and/or physical requirements of this position include the following: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) medium weights of up to 50 pounds. The employee is required to climb and work while standing on ladders up to 10 feet. The employee will navigate crawl spaces and back of house spaces. The employee must safely operate a mobile work platform and work up to 30 feet in the air. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard. The employee frequently is required to be in one position for long periods of screen use, reach with hands and arms, and talk and hear both in person and over devices. The employee interacts in close spaces and frequently with other workers, vendors, and guests. May be in situations which require conflict resolution. The position works in a museum environment with artificial light and air.
