Job Description

About the Job:

Working at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, the Education Intern will perform research for Discovery Cart programs, assist with hosting six summer camps, assist with program set up and take down, and greet and monitor school groups. The Education Intern will learn the practice of researching, designing and completing Marin Corps educational programs for Homeschool days, Family days, and adult programming. The Education Intern will develop skills in communicating with various age groups in delivery tours, proper means of greeting and monitoring school groups along with writing lesson plans that include the Virginia Standards of Learning.

Location/Schedule:

Fully in-person: This is an in-person position located at 18900 Jefferson David Hwy, Triangle, VA 22172. This position is limited to 29 hours per week with a term not to exceed three years.

Responsibilities:

  • Research topics on Marine Corps History.
  • Developing programs that include the Virginia Standards of Learning.
  • Produce educational materials for Discovery Cart Program.
  • Work with various student groups and summer campers.
  • Accomplish all tasks appropriately assigned or requested
  • Prepare materials for summer camps
  • Greet student groups
  • Monitor student groups in the galleries

Requirements:

Education/Experience:

  • Background working with various age groups
  • Knowledge of American History – including at least 2 college courses
  • Customer Service Skills

Technological Skills:

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Familiarity with Graphic design software

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Familiarity with Military History
  • Ability to research and present military topics and American History

Other:

  • Ability to work as a team member

Environment and Physical Conditions:

The environmental factors and/or physical requirements of this position include the following: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10-20 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard. The employee frequently is required to be in one position for long periods of screen use, reach with hands and arms, and talk and hear both in person and over devices. The employee interacts in close spaces and frequently with other workers, vendors, and clients. May be in situations which require conflict resolution. The position works in both an office environment with artificial light and air, and an occasional outside environment with exposure to the elements.
