Special Assistant: Digital Communications

About the Job:

Working at the Marine Corps History Division, the Digital Communications Special Assistant will help promote and develop engagement with the activities and historical resources held by the Division. The ideal candidate is creative, proactive, and detail-oriented, with an interest in digital communications, graphic design, and visual storytelling. Working closely with the Chief of Strategic Communications, the incumbent will assist in creating engaging digital content for social media, websites, presentations, and other outreach initiatives that advance the Division's mission.

Location/Schedule:

This is an in-person position located at 2044 Broadway Street, Marine Corps Base Quantico, 22134.

This position is limited to 29 hours per week with a term not to exceed three years. A flexible hybrid work schedule may be available after an initial onboarding period, with opportunities to telework up to two days per week based on workload and supervisor approval.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and produce digital communications products, including social media graphics, presentations, website content, and promotional materials using Canva, Adobe Photoshop, or similar software, while maintaining consistency with established branding and communication objectives.
  • Collaborates with the Chief of Strategic Communications to develop visual content for communications campaigns by translating campaign concepts, branding guidance, messaging, and reference materials into engaging digital products.
  • Assist in managing the Division's social media platforms by scheduling and publishing content, maintaining an editorial calendar, monitoring audience engagement, and identifying opportunities to improve audience engagement and expand the Division's digital presence.
  • Assist in researching and developing content for communications campaigns by identifying historical resources, drafting copy, and ensuring the accuracy of published materials.
  • Accomplish all tasks appropriately assigned or requested.
  • Support public outreach activities, special events, and other strategic communications initiatives as assigned.
  • Assist with photography and basic photo editing during Division events, lectures, ceremonies, and public programs for use in digital and print communications.

Requirements:

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in history, education, marketing, communications, or similar.

Technological Skills:

  • Proficiency in graphic design and video editing software.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

  • Basic understanding of social media platforms and their respective audiences.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Creative mindset with the ability to produce visually appealing content.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Other:

  • Ability to quickly adapt to a fast-paced environment and perform multiple tasks effectively.

Environment and Physical Conditions:

The environmental factors and/or physical requirements of this position include the following: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10-20 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard. The employee frequently is required to be in one position for long periods of screen use, reach with hands and arms, and talk and hear both in person and over devices. The employee interacts in close spaces and frequently with other workers, vendors, and clients. May be in situations which require conflict resolution. The position works in an office environment with artificial light and air. Occasionally are exposed to contaminants like dust.
