Parent Engagement Program Facilitator (Part-time)

Many Languages One Voice (MLOV), was founded in 2010, and our mission is to foster the leadership and greater civic participation of immigrants and refugees who do not speak English as a primary language. We believe an actively engaged community that challenges existing inequities by dominant power is key to achieving systemic change. Thus, we support our members’ leadership and amplify the voice of our most vulnerable members to find solutions to the systemic racial inequities that impact their lives.

MLOV is a leading player in the immigrant rights and justice movement in DC and regularly builds partnerships and coalitions with wide-ranging stakeholders. In addition to nonprofits and community organizations, MLOV works with government officials, agencies, businesses, and worker groups to advance power-building of immigrant communities in DC.

MLOV Parent Engagement Program: The primary purpose of our Parent Engagement Program is to foster strong relationships between immigrant parents and their children, and to build the capacity of parents to acquire the skills, tools, and resources they need to effectively engage with schools and play a leading role in their children's education.

Padres Engagement Program Facilitator: The Facilitator will be primarily responsible for planning and implementing weekly meetings with parents of school age children: middle school - high school. the topics for the program include:

  • Understanding the US and Washington, DC education systems

  • Language Access and Understanding your Rights

  • Socioemotional Development of your child

  • College readiness of your child

  • Advocacy strategies

Work hours will be mainly afternoon/evening or mornings twice per week, with additional hours remotely as needed for lesson preparation. Salary range for this position is at least $22/hour. This role is a part-time (approximately 10 hours/week) hourly position.‍

An overview of responsibilities is below. Please note this overview may not fully encompass all possible duties, as the work may evolve over time in response to community needs and organizational priorities.

Parents participant support

  • Plan and lead the implementation of program sessions held on mornings or afternoons/evenings for groups of 10 - 15 parents;

  • Using MLOV’s parent engagement curriculum, and/or resources obtained through independent research, plan and implement meaningful and interactive activities for program participants;

  • Develop and support creative programming for participants;

  • In collaboration with other program staff, identify and facilitate recruitment of participants;

  • Research, build and maintain partnerships with local agencies and organizations to better serve program participants;

  • Collaborate with other program staff on planning and implementing the MLOV parent engagement program;

  • Communicate with participants in regard to engagement in the program (attendance, development, etc.);

  • Support program set-up and tear-down before and after session;

  • Maintain a safe and supportive environment for all participants;

  • Provide 1 on 1 support, guidance, and coaching to participants;

Organizational Involvement

  • On occasion, provide support for other MLOV programs, including participating in organization-wide community events;

Administrative:

  • Draft reports and compile data as needed;

Ideal candidate characteristics:

  • Bachelor degree with a focus in education, political science, sociology, social work, or related fields is preferred;

  • At least 1 year of experience working directly with DC schools (or other teaching experience)

  • Experience training groups of under-resourced communities;

  • Proficiency in a language in addition to English, Spanish is required;

  • High level of cultural competence;

  • Team player, motivated and organized;

  • Clearances

    • Possesses or willing to obtain the following background checks:

    • Current clear check from DC Child and Family Services Agency (CFSA) Child Protection Registry (CPR)

    • Current clear check from Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Criminal Background Check

    • Current clear check from Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Criminal Background Check, and

    • Current clear check from National Sex Offender Registry (NSO).
