About Lodestar—A New Way of Doing School

Building on the success of Lighthouse Community Charter School, Lodestar is founded on design principles that promote agency (the ability, desire, and awareness of possibilities in order to make change) and belonging in a community. When learners develop agency and belong, they will be successful in college and their career of choice, and will positively impact their community. To get there, learners need:

  • a community that addresses the whole person, embraces diversity, supports positive identity development, is restorative, and prioritizes building relationships,

  • learning experiences that are personalized, purposeful, visible, active, and design-centered.

Lodestar will look different than many other schools. Rather than travel in one grade-level cohort with one teacher per year, students will follow a personalized and flexible schedule that gives them opportunities to build relationships and collaborate with their peers while also enabling them to receive "just right" instruction in math and literacy. We expand on Lighthouse’s success with project based learning  in age-based cohorts by deepening the time we spend on investigating real world problems and integrating making and the arts. Students access self-directed Making and Art studios that both support work related to learning expeditions and allow students the freedom to pursue passions. This model respects the teacher as expert and designer by giving our teachers an opportunity to specialize in designing and delivering either project based interdisciplinary learning or small-group math or literacy instruction. We will open our doors in Fall 2016 in East Oakland, starting with grades K-2 and 6, adding new grade levels each year until we are a K-12 school.


 

About The Supervision Role

Lodestar is seeking multiple Lunch / Recess Supervisors to support the learning environment for Lighthouse students during lunch and recess. We are looking for individuals who are relentlessly committed to ensuring that traditionally underserved students achieve our mission of completing college, securing a career of choice, and becoming lifelong learners able to create change in their own lives and in our community while attending to the duties of the role.

  • Community: Works collaboratively with other student supervisors to address the needs of students during lunch and recess.  

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Effectively implement Lodestar’s rules and expectations specifically in, but not limited to, the cafeteria and yard.

  • Actively supervise, circulating amongst and interacting with students and adults.

  • Provide a safe environment for all of our students.

  • Lunch-duty specific:

    • Encourage students to make healthy choices about their minds and bodies. Boost student’s motivation to fuel their bodies with the correct foods for their well-being.

    • Assist with the daily clean-up and maintenance of the lunch room and kitchen. Support with the preparation of breakfast meals for the following school day.

  • Recess-duty specific:

    • Circulate around the yard and encourage safe play.

    • Assist with the daily clean-up maintenance of the playground and encourage students to take responsibility in helping keep their campus clean.

  • Set clear short- and long-term goals to further your work experience and better your practice.

  • Consistently communicate both celebrations and areas of improvement to Teachers, Deans, Parents, etc.

  • Consistently implement support plans for all identified students to maximize success for all students.

  • Administer Lodestar’s student policies and procedures (i.e. attendance, dress code, etc.).

  • Attend and actively participate in professional development activities, team and staff meetings to improve performance.

  • Other duties as assigned

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • HS Diploma preferred

  • At least two years of related experience

  • Must complete requirements for school-based hiring:

    • Background Check

    • CPR/First Aid Certification

    • TB Test

 

TIME COMMITMENT

This position is part-time, with time off during LCCPS’ school calendar (i.e., Holiday breaks), and requires a minimum of the following hours:

  • Daily, 11 am- 1:00 pm ( Recess Supervision position) and 11 am- 1:30 pm (Lunch supervision position)

  • Additional 30 minute- 1 hour team meetings and individual 30 minute check-ins ( frequency dates/times TBD)

If interested in adding additional hours, inquire with hiring manager. Additional work may be available in our Extended Day Program. 

 

SUPERVISION

This position reports to the Dean of Students.

 

COMPENSATION

Hourly rate; Commensurate with experience.

Competitive benefits package: retirement benefits included in this role.  Medical & dental coverage is available if employee assumes other responsibilities that bring employee’s FTE over .6 (24 hours per week).
