About Lodestar—A New Way of Doing School

Lodestar is an innovative, new school that opened in East Oakland in Fall 2016. Lodestar staff and families are excited to transform the traditional model of education to be student-centered and experiential. Our school is built around:

This model allows our teachers to specialize in delivering either project-based interdisciplinary learning or personalized math or literacy instruction. We opened our doors in 2016 with K-2 and 6 grades and have been growing since. In Fall of 2020, we will open the high school with our first class of 9th graders rising from 8th grade, adding grades until we have our first class of graduates in Spring of 2023. THE OPPORTUNITY:

Lighthouse Community Public Schools (LCPS) is looking for an innovative, highly-motivated, and values-aligned school leader to serve as Lodestar’s 6-12 principal building on the innovative model established by our founding principal and team. Lodestar’s 6-12 Principal will have the unique opportunity to lead our current 6-8 program while shaping the next phase of Lodestar’s innovative instructional model by designing and launching the high school program for student-centered learning that aligns to our vision of college and career readiness for every student.

At LCPS, the Principal is the instructional leader holding primary responsibility for ensuring the high academic achievement of all students. As manager of the schools’ academic program, the 6-12 Principal develops, inspires, empowers, and supervises teachers and other staff. The Principal is also responsible for cultivating school culture, including serving as a champion and liaison for students and families. The principal will be accountable for student and staff outcomes across 6-12, accelerating achievement for all students and eliminating equity gaps (with particular attention to students with IEPs, English learners, and African-American boys).  The 6-12 Principal will work in close collaboration with the K-5 Principal to ensure the development of a strong K-12 community for the students, families, and staff at Lodestar..

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND OUTCOMES

Core responsibilities for Lodestar’s 6-12 Principal include:

Recruitment, onboarding, supervision, development and support of instructional staff

  • Build a strong, collaborative, equity-focused adult learning community 6-12, including hiring, developing, and retaining excellent teachers and staff to serve our students and families;

  • Supervise, observe, coach, evaluate, and develop the instructional staff utilizing knowledge of adult learning theory and in alignment with LCPS Instructional Stances and LCPS Framework for Transformational Teaching;

  • Nurture distributed leadership in support of the school’s mission and continued growth and sustainability.

Management & Monitoring of Academic Programs & Student Outcomes

  • Serve as the visionary and manager for the academic and professional programs for the school ensuring that all student are college and career ready and meet the outcomes in the LCPS Graduate Profile.

  • Assume responsibility for evaluating student learning: supervise the collection, analysis, and utilization of key data to improve learning and engagement for all students.  

  • Ensure in-class and out-of-class interventions are effective and matched with student needs, resulting in equitable outcomes for all students;

  • Work closely with Director of Finance to ensure school operates within budget.

  • Oversee retention and passage processes working to close gaps in students' successful passage and graduation.

School Culture Builder

  • Collaboratively develop systems & structures to promote a strong school culture in service of the school mission with staff, students, and families;

  • Build strong relationships with students, families, and the community.

  • Apply restorative school practices and policies in resolving conflicts in the  school community..

K-12 Systems and Vision Holder & Collaborator

  • Collaborate with K-5 principal and other instructional leaders as appropriate in decisions and resource allocation impacting the whole Lodestar K-12 community or where alignment of systems and processes is especially important.

High School Launch

  • In conjunction with the HS Designer, support the development of our high school academic program during the 2019-20 school year aligned to our HS Vision combining personalized and self-directed learning with interdisciplinary project-based learning opportunities;

  • Supervise a HS Designer and support their work to be prepared for launch in 2020-21.

  • Hire a skilled and diverse founding instructional staff for the 2020-2021 opening;

  • Support the development of vision for high school school policies, systems, and structures;

  • Support student and family recruitment & outreach efforts to ensure the school opens with 9th grade fully enrolled in fall of 2020 and grows to be fully enrolled over the next four years.

Leadership Development and Reflection

  • Model holding a learner-driven stance for own professional learning.

  • Engage in regular collaboration, learning, and development through coaching, co-principal meetings, and one-on-one check-ins with CAO.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least 5+ years of successful secondary classroom teaching and school leadership experience, required

  • Experience teaching/leading in urban education serving students of color from low-income backgrounds

  • MA in education, educational leadership or related field, required; administrative credential, preferred

  • Supervisory & management experience, including coaching and evaluation of teachers,

  • Knowledge of learner-centered curriculum, instruction, and assessment,

  • Experience working in Oakland schools preferred and charter school experience, a plus,

  • EL Education experience, a plus.

  • Spanish fluency preferred,

SUPERVISION

This position reports to: Chief Academic Officer (CAO).

TIME COMMITMENT 

This position is a a full-time salaried exempt 12-month position that follows the 220-day school year and summer schedule. Includes approximately 5 weeks of paid holidays/breaks during the school year in addition to 10 days of vacation time during the summer. Start date is July 1, 2019 with some paid time in the spring to provide opportunities to engage with stakeholders and work with the leadership team prior to fully coming onboard in summer 2019.
