THE OPPORTUNITY

Middle School Youth Leadership Developer

Lighthouse Community Public School is looking for an excellent and engaging Middle School Youth Leadership Developer; a person who will be relentlessly committed to ensuring that traditionally underserved students of color achieve our mission of completing college and securing the career of choice.  Lighthouse staff members believe that this important mission is not only attainable; it is essential to transforming our Oakland community.

You will offer our students:

Relationship-Based Community

  • Learning and experiences are rooted in our community and our student’s identities.

  • Support students to create healthy relationships and develop collaborative skills.

  • Create positive relationships by building nurturing and affirming adult-student and student-student relationships with a focus on building a community of risk-taking learners.

 

Professional Leadership

  • Grow and contribute as a youth developer, colleague, learner, and community member.

  • Demonstrate advocacy, flexibility, autonomy, and collegiality.

  • Administer all policies and procedures in a professional and timely manner as mandated by Lighthouse, the State and Federal agencies (i.e., attendance records, dress code, reporting of sexual/physical abuse).

Role responsibilities may include:

  • Implementing Tier 2 small group and/or individual case management targeted at social-emotional needs; 

  • Developing and supporting the role of our student council leadership; 

  • Leading and supporting student-driven affinity groups; 

  • Coordinating cultural celebrations and awareness building; 

  • Consulting with teachers on Crew curriculum development; 

  • Developing a peer-to-peer conflict resolution program that incorporates elements of our Restorative Justice approach; 

  • Collaborating with Deans from across the K-12 school to organize cross-grade activities and programs (ex. ongoing 6th-grade reading buddies for kindergarten students)

  • Developing entrepreneurship and student fundraising; 

  • Connecting Lighthouse students to extracurricular opportunities and managing those partnerships in collaboration with the Dean of Students

  • Other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor

 

We would love to hear from you if your educational toolbox includes the following:

  • 3+ years working in an urban school environment and middle school setting highly preferred

  • Associates Degree or equivalent required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred

  • Experience with adolescent youth development preferred

  • Experience with Restorative Justice preferred

  • Experience with Google apps preferred

  • Bilingual in Spanish and experience rooted in Oakland a plus

 

Supervision:

This position will report to Middle School Principal

 

TIME COMMITMENT

200-day work year for 11-month employees with 23 student-free days for professional learning and collaboration with colleagues and families. All instructional staff will report in early August 2019.

Common Building Hours:  All teachers are expected to maintain hours of 8:00 - 4:00 pm and 8:00-5:00 one day a week for Professional Development.
