                                                                          The Opportunity

                                                 Middle School ELD Coordinator and Teacher

The role of the ELD Coordinator and Specialist is to provide English Language Development instruction to middle school English Learners, supporting the development of their English proficiency. Additionally, the ELD Coordinator coordinates EL services across the K-12 school, and supports colleagues in successfully supporting English Learners in their classrooms by providing teacher coaching, modeling and development opportunities as appropriate. The ELD Coordinator works collaboratively with classroom teachers and school leadership to ensure that the Lighthouse program supports all English Learners to develop English proficiency and succeed academically.

Key Responsibilities:

 

K-12 EL Program Coordination and Coaching: (50%)

  • Lead the creation of a collaborative vision for K-12 English Learner programs, with attention to the needs of different grade levels and EL profiles.

  • Use EL data to monitor, evaluate and adjust English Learner programs.

  • Plan, design, and facilitate ongoing professional development for teachers applying knowledge of adult learning theory and team facilitation to maximize learning and meet school-wide goals.

  • Coach teachers who are working on goals of supporting English Learners, utilizing knowledge of adult learning theory and cycles of data analysis and reflection to improve instructional practice & meet institutional goals.

  • Conduct regular walkthroughs and observations of teachers in service of a shared knowledge of current teaching practice in relation to supporting English Learners.

  • Coordinate ELPAC testing.

 

Designated ELD Instruction: (50%)

  • Instruct 5th-8th grade English Learner students on a rotating schedule towards appropriate EL goals and ultimately redesignation.

  • Grow and contribute as an educator, colleague, learner, and community member.

  • Demonstrate advocacy, flexibility, autonomy, and collegiality.

  • Administer all policies and procedures in a professional and timely manner as mandated by Lighthouse, the State and Federal agencies (i.e., attendance records, dress code, reporting of sexual/physical abuse).

 

We would love to hear from you if your educational toolbox includes the following:

  • 3+ years teaching in an Urban school environment and middle school setting, highly preferred

  • Successful ELD teaching experience, highly preferred

  • B.A. or B.S. required; Master’s Degree in Education preferred

  • California teaching credential required (or out of state teacher licensure being transferred to CA)

  • 2+ years of coaching and/or school leadership experience preferred

  • Experience with curriculum planning and data-analysis

  • Experience with Google apps preferred

  • Bilingual in Spanish a plus

 

Supervision:

This position will report to:

Middle School Principal

 

TIME COMMITMENT

200-day work year for 11-month employees with 23 student-free days for professional learning and collaboration with colleagues and families. All instructional staff will report in early August, 2018 (exact calendar TBD).

Common Building Hours:  All teachers are expected to maintain hours of  8:00 - 4:00 pm and 8:00-5:00 one day a week for Professional Development.
