In-House Substitute Teacher (6-10) — Competencies and Qualifications
We are looking for a talented educator to join our 6-10 team as a In-House Substitute teacher who is relentlessly committed to ensuring that traditionally underserved students of color achieve our mission of completing college and securing the career of choice. Lighthouse teachers believe that this important mission is not only attainable; it is essential to transforming our Oakland community. This position will involve daily subbing across 6-10 with the possibility of longer assignments for teachers on leave or traveling. This position comes with guaranteed hours (Minimum 24 hours/3 days) including assignment of other work if a substitute is not needed that day. This person will have experience teaching and/or substitute teaching a variety of content areas and age groups, the ability to build strong rapport and relationships with students, and experience working in urban educational settings. - Substitute teach for classes across 6-10 as assigned by supervisor. May teach either individual classes or sections on a short term basis or may be assigned for a multi-week placement in the instance of a teacher going on a temporary leave. Longer term (more than 30 day placements) requires a teaching credential or emergency permit.
- Maintain a regular schedule and collaborate with supervisor to determine teaching placements in advance to the extent possible.
- Report to work on time even when a specific assignment has not yet been scheduled and fulfill other office or teacher support duties as needed.
- Follow up regularly with classroom teachers about lesson plans, students behavioral and academic issues, and the extent to which students met the learning objective while teacher was absent; this includes providing written documentation of what occurred, collecting student work as directed, and in-person communication as appropriate.
- Build and maintain classroom culture that is supportive and learning-centered, undergirded by strong management, efficient procedures and systems, but most evident in the full inclusion of African-American boys, students with trauma, and students with IEPs in the social and learning community.
- Demonstrate culturally responsive pedagogy and practice including unrelenting high expectations and an assets-based approach for every student.
Ensure that students are at the center of their own learning and deeply engaged in ways that foster agency and self-direction.
- Follow through with Case Manager, Director of Instruction, students, and families when any student issues arise while substituting.
- Create positive relationships by building nurturing and affirming teacher-student, student-student, and teacher-family partnerships with a focus on building a community of risk-taking, collaborative learners.
- Grow and contribute as an educator, colleague, learner, and community member including engaging in professional development and your own growth as a teacher in service of student learning and outcomes.
- Demonstrate advocacy, flexibility, autonomy, and collegiality.
- Administer all policies and procedures in a professional and timely manner as mandated by LCPS, and state and federal agencies (i.e., attendance records, dress code, reporting of sexual/physical abuse).

B.A. or B.S. required, Masters Degree preferred
30 day Substitute Permit required; appropriate CA teaching credential or emergency license, preferred
2+ years teaching experience in an urban education setting serving low-income students of color preferred
Experience with Google apps
Bilingual in Spanish a plus
24-40 hours per week as part of a 10-month work year. Exact schedule to be determined with supervisor. If full-time will be eligible for salary and full benefits; if part-time will be placed on hourly schedule and may or may not be benefits eligible.
Common Building Hours: All teachers are expected to maintain hours of 8:00 - 4:00 pm M, Tu, Th, Fri and 8:00-5:00 on Wednesdays for Professional Development.
