Job Description

Teitelman Chair Attorney - Full-Time

Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, Inc. (LSEM), a non-profit law firm that provides free legal
assistance to people living with low-income/low opportunity has created a new chaired position
named after its former Executive Director and Missouri Supreme Court Justice, the late Richard
B. Teitelman. Judge Teitelman was dedicated to strategic and high impact legal advocacy during
his tenure at Legal Services of Eastern Missouri. This new position reflects his vision and his
unwavering commitment to justice.

The attorney named to the Teitelman Chair will focus on litigation and other impact advocacy
tools to address policies and practices that create barriers to equal opportunities in education,
housing, health care, public benefits, immigration or other basic civil rights for individuals
marginalized by lack of resources, race, disability, or other circumstances. He/she will engage
with a wide range of community partners in cases and initiatives to help carry out systemic
advocacy. The Chair Attorney will work closely with and report directly to the Director of
Advocacy to identify and develop systemic advocacy issues and to assist on the issues facing
Legal Services clients.

The attorney should have strong litigation and advocacy skills so that he/she can provide
assistance to Legal Services’ various units in these areas. Experience with federal and state court
litigation is required. The Chair Attorney will meet regularly with the Director of Advocacy and
the various units on systemic issues and work closely with unit staff in identifying, prioritizing
and developing systemic issues. He/she would work with the Director of Advocacy to put
together and participate in litigation teams for various cases and bring in outside resources as
needed to partner with Legal Services attorneys.

The Teitelman Chair Attorney will also serve as a mentor for other attorneys and staff, assisting
them with strategy, litigation and technical assistance. Depending on the circumstances, the
Chair will, as appropriate, provide supervision and/or guidance to the other Legal Services
attorneys working on systemic cases and may serve as either lead or co-counsel. The ideal
candidate will have at least ten years of litigation experience but greater than 15 years is
preferred. Legal Services will ensure that the Chair Attorney has sufficient support staff to carry
out affirmative litigation successfully.

Salary commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits including medical, dental and vision
insurance, a generous time off policy, 403(b) and profit sharing plans, long-term disability and
life insurance, employee assistance plan, flexible spending account, and paid CLE and Bar dues.
