Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, Inc. (Legal Services), a non-profit law firm providing free civil legal assistance to low income/low opportunity individuals in 21 eastern Missouri counties, is seeking a Staff Attorney for its Immigration Law Program. The Staff Attorney will provide legal representation to clients in a wide variety of immigration matters, including advocacy for victims of human trafficking and domestic violence, client representation in removal proceedings, and representation before the Board of Immigration Appeals. Federal court work is expected. Community education, outreach, and intake are important components of the job, as well as participating in ongoing collaborative efforts with agency partners.
· The ideal candidate will care deeply about improving access to justice for low-income immigrants and refugees, Exhibit exceptional work ethic, and possess excellent writing and oral advocacy skills.
· Flexibility, teamwork, and compliance with LSEM regulatory rules required.
· Previous experience in immigration law, and foreign language ability highly preferred.
· The attorney must be licensed to practice in Missouri or have the ability to be admitted to the Missouri bar by the first available bar exam, by application without examination, or by temporary certification.
The Immigration Staff Attorney must be able to relate well with low-income clients, possess excellent communication and writing skills, be computer proficient, and collaborate well with others. This person must demonstrate initiative, sound judgment and a commitment to a legal aid mission but be open to creative and innovative ways of fulfilling that mission. Previous experience in immigration law is preferred. Previous legal experience, working with nonprofit organizations a plus. The Immigration Staff Attorney must be licensed to practice law in the state of Missouri or become licensed without examination.
