Job Description

About Us

KiwiCo  is an innovative eCommerce company that sparks kids’ creativity and curiosity through offline and online materials and inspiration. We offer kids a delightful, engaging way to explore, create, and learn; and arm them with the creative confidence and tools to change the world. Our core offering is a subscription service that delivers hands-on projects to kids of all ages. We also have an online store and a content hub for families. We take great pride and ownership in the products and experiences we design and in the community of parents and kids we serve. Our office is located in Mountain View, within walking distance to the Caltrain station. Currently, we are working remotely. As guidelines permit, we will move to our plan of hybrid, remote/in-office work.

Role and Responsibilities:

KiwiCo is seeking an Associate Editorial Director (or Editorial Director) to take on the responsibility for leading editorial content for our hands-on projects for kids of all ages and helping to deliver engaging, enriching, and inspiring experiences to our customers.

We are looking for an experienced leader who is passionate about developing creative teams and delivering inspiring content for kids and families. You are a strategic thinker who rolls up your sleeves to get things done. You have a background in content, experience with cross-functional creative collaboration, and the ability to apply user feedback and brand standards to produce pieces that are educational, engaging, and, above all, fun! You continually look for ways to improve team processes, get energized by tough problems, and love collaborating with others to get things done. In this role, you will:

  • Manage a team of editors and provide performance feedback, coaching, and support, as well as taking on responsibility for resourcing to meet production timelines for that team.

  • Define the editorial approach for new products, and lead the creation of pieces that support brand values and business goals, working closely and collaboratively with product designers and visual designers.

  • Set editorial standards and guidelines for your team and provide feedback to ensure standards are met.

  • Define improvements to standards and lead to change.

Required Qualifications

As a start-up celebrating creativity and development, we believe and encourage the same in our team. We seek team players with an infectious positive energy, great initiative, and a get-it-done attitude. Candidates must thrive in ambiguity, love a rapid pace, and see themselves as lifelong learners. Required skills and qualifications include:

  • 10+ years of editorial content experience with progressive responsibilities and experience working within a fast-paced production environment.

  • Experience or interest in communicating STEAM concepts to young audiences in a fun, creative, engaging way.

  • Able to create and establish an editorial voice and guidelines from scratch, in addition to scaling an existing set of standards.

  • Innovative thinking and creative problem-solving skills, with a proven record of innovation and an understanding of how to balance business objectives with user needs.

  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to give and receive feedback well and to collaborate cross-functionally on creative projects.

  • Broad operating range with the ability to think strategically. Enthusiasm both for directing others and for rolling up your sleeves and delivering creative work.

  • Achievement in building, mentoring, and leading a high-performing team of creatives. Able to give direction and feedback to achieve desired outcomes and a consistent brand.

  • Leadership across the entire product lifecycle and multiple product launches. Able to prioritize and manage workload and meet project timelines and deliverable dates.

  • Experience with people management and coaching.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in education, formal or informal.

  • Experience in an entrepreneurial startup environment.

  • Experience with children’s products, magazines, or other publications.

If you’re passionate about delivering innovative, delightful, and enriching products and experiences for kids, we’d love to hear from you. Please apply by submitting a resume and cover letter telling us why you're interested in KiwiCo and what you think you'd bring to this specific position and our team. Please note that this role is not eligible for full-time remote work.
