Part-Time Managing Editor – Soapbox Cincinnati

Issue Media Group

Soapbox is hiring a Managing Editor to direct the publication's coverage of development, innovation, talent, and transformation in the Cincinnati region. Soapbox is published by Issue Media Group, a Detroit-based Inc. 5000 media company and a national network of local publications dedicated to the story of people changing cities.

The ideal candidate will have experience writing and editing high-quality magazine-style features, experience in online publishing and social media, and an interest in urban and social issues, economic development, innovation, and technology. This candidate will also bring a willingness to learn, a collaborative spirit, and a strong set of connections to thought leaders and creative talent in the market. Candidates must be based in Cincinnati and should have a good grasp of its neighborhoods.

Managing Editor responsibilities include:

  • Editorial leadership

    • Drive the editorial vision and mission and coordinate all content for Soapbox

    • Agree and adhere to IMG's mission, values and standards

    • Collaborate with IMG's Editorial Director, Soapbox Publisher and Market Director and IMG network as appropriate to develop story ideas and angles

    • Maintain and share a local editorial calendar with content planned around IMG's focus areas

    • Assist in oversight of special projects as applicable (local underwriting programs, etc.). Additional budget for management may be available with some projects.

    • Provide editorial leadership for Soapbox region

      • Manage freelancers local freelancer writers and photographers

      • Recruit and maintain a stable of high-quality freelance talent

      • Develop story ideas with local, regional and statewide audiences in mind

  • Contribution requirements

    • Contribute 1 feature stories per month or equivalent (included in monthly retainer)

    • Contribute 3-4 In In The News OR Buzz items (included in monthly retainer)

  • Production management

    • Copy edit and proof all content including features, news, headlines, abstracts, descriptions, photos and tags

    • Edit, load and link all feature content including features, news, headlines, abstracts, descriptions, photos and tags

    • Manage photography uploads and assembly in coordination with local photographer

    • Coordinate weekly newsletter (assemble, test, copy edit and launch)

    • Ensure that content is posted multiple times per week (flexible/daily publishing)

  • Social media management

    • Maintain a 5 day/week presence on social media channels (Facebook and Twitter at a minimum, other channels at editor's discretion)

  • Audience growth management

    • Set and pursue audience growth goals and strategies with support of IMG editorial director

  • Business support

    • Coordinate with IMG publishers and leadership team on regular / monthly business review calls, business updates, conflict resolution or strategy discussions.

    • Attend occasional calls/meetings not to exceed 2 hours per month to support special projects, check-ins and collective impact gathering

    • Lead monthly editorial team meeting.

    • Manage Soapbox's monthly base budget and control editorial costs in collaboration with IMG leadership team. Monthly base budget is determined by IMG leadership team and is subject to change.

    • Attend quarterly editorial advisory meeting with underwriters and sponsors.

 

This is a part-time, contract position that is specifically designed for freelance writers and editors (or other individuals who are interested in seeking freelance writing work). Successful MEs understand how to effectively balance competing demands on time.
