Job Description

Issue Media Group is seeking a part-time, freelance managing editor to oversee and develop content for a new digital publication that covers Midland, Michigan. The editor will drive the editorial mission and vision of the new publication to tell the story of talent, investment, innovation and emerging assets that are shaping the Midland region’s future.

The ideal candidate will have experience writing and editing high-quality, magazine-style features, experience in online publishing and social media, and an interest in entrepreneurship, community and economic development, diversity, innovation, and technology. This candidate will also bring a willingness to learn, a collaborative spirit, and a strong set of connections to thought leaders and creative talent in the market. Candidates must be based in mid-Michigan.

This is a part-time, contract position that is specifically designed for freelance writers and editors (or other individuals who are interested in seeking freelance writing work. A successful editor understands how to effectively balance competing demands on time.

Issue Media Group, a Detroit-based Inc. 5000 media company and a national network of local publications dedicated to the story of people changing cities and economies.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead editorial vision for the publication

  • Develop compelling and original locally focused story ideas to amplify the region’s narrative of emerging entrepreneurship, talent, innovation, and place, both locally and nationally

  • Assist in collecting data and information to map the local entrepreneurial ecosystem and identify key resources and needs

  • Manage a shared editorial calendar and work closely with freelancers to execute against that calendar consistently, on deadline and on budget

  • Produce, distribute and promote a regular newsletter according to an agreed upon schedule

  • Attend regular team meetings or calls to review content, analytics, events and all publication activities

  • Manage social media channels and ensure stories are shared on social media and other distribution channels in a timely manner

  • Develop, grow and engage a targeted audience

  • Attend regular events and advisory meetings alongside project team

  • A strong and sophisticated editorial approach to the subject area that resonates with a knowledgeable target audience

  • Content is fresh, vibrant, and well-read

  • Complete, on-time, quality delivery of all project requirements

  • A flexible, creative, and organized approach to content management

  • Demonstrated content reach and audience growth

 

Qualifications:

  • Experience writing and editing news and magazine-style feature stories

  • Experience assigning stories to writers and photographers

  • Ability to manage content flow

  • Familiarity with content management systems

  • Familiarity with Google Analytics

  • Experience growing an audience via social media

  • Self-motivated with excellent people and organization skills

  • At least two years experience in writing and editing

  • Operates independently but is great at collaborating with others

  • Has the poise, grace and communication skills to successfully work with multiple teams
