Senior UX Designer

We're looking for a highly capable, senior level UX Designer (5-6 years of relevant experience) to elevate the quality of our SaaS enterprise apps, in a mature startup context in Palo Alto, CA.
Many world-class brands rely upon Instart to ensure the safety and performance of their websites. We need to rely upon YOU to help design the interfaces, interactions, and data visualizations towards that end. It’s all about our new “Digital Experience Platform”; you will have an immediate tangible impact on making it personable and informative, because it needs to be! Design is recognized by Instart executives (including the CEO -- who has been through Stanford d.school workshops himself) as a vital ingredient to our customers’ success — and our own.
Strong digital product design, visual design, usability, and communication skills are vital to this role. So, the successful candidate (that’s you!) should be highly skilled with Sketch, Invision, Zeplin, as well as whiteboard + markers. You must be willing to dive in deep with Devs & PMs in scoping and sketching out features per release cycles, applying an optimistic, empathetic lens grounded in user needs & benefits. We will need you to jump into some visual design with lightweight production for the Front-End Devs (i.e., slice up assets for delivery). And, if you have prototyping chops beyond Invision, like Framer or Principle or modern web programming (React, etc.) -- hey, that’s super awesome! (but not required)
Actual user engagement is an expectation though -- via discovery sessions and usability testing rounds. You must be able to learn about real user needs and listen to their reactions to your designs in an unbiased manner, to enable rapid iterations, and help validate our assumptions. You should feel comfortable running user sessions with little supervision. We’ll help you get set up with the first few, don’t worry!
To succeed in this role, you must be eager to wrestle with complex technical concepts, shaping them into elegant, thoughtful interfaces and flows that are feasible per Engineering constraints. And we’ll need you to question the requirements, challenge various points of view (constructively!), and defend your design choices with rationale grounded in best practices and/or research.
Do you have experience contributing to a design system? Great, because you’ll have the special opportunity to help build and extend ours as we evolve it, with modernized styles and behaviors!
Interact with users via video calls and local site visits; hold interviews and user testing sessions as needed
Translate product stories/requirements into flows & screens per Agile sprint cadence
Create diagrams, wireframes, mockups per an existing style guide; iterate accordingly per team judgment and deadlines
Evolve that style guide into a robust design system & component library!
Identify trade-offs and risks to design choices, crisply communicate them, and diligently collaborate with cross-functional teams towards resolution
Spec out details for Front End UI Devs with clear, thorough behavior notes (states, conditions, error handling, etc.) BTW, we’ve got a solid content writer to help!
Work closely with Front End UI Devs to ensure high quality, accurate execution of your designs for market release (i.e., “design QA”)
5-6 years experience designing (and shipping) SaaS apps, particularly for “enterprise” or “B2B” contexts (with complex jargon, intricate workflows, data visualizations)
Experience designing across the full product development cycle: from high-level concepts to detailed flows/wires to implementation (with pixel-level precision)
Capable of working within a design system/style guide and also evolving it accordingly per defined and discovered needs
Demonstrated ability of building good, healthy relationships with engineering, product, and marketing peers
Excellent verbal, written, and visual communication and presentation (“storytelling”) skills. This includes the willingness to provide and receive constructive feedback as part of the design process.
Strong user-driven focus, with demonstrated ability to run basic user research sessions and translate insights from such interviews into real design choices.
A well-curated portfolio showcasing examples of relevant, exemplary design work. It should explain why you would be a fit for our needs.
Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in design (Master’s degree preferred).
