MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduate of a NLN approved Nursing program
  • Graduate of a formal peri-operative nursing program or documented on the job training
  • Three years or greater experience as a Perioperative Nurse
  • Current Texas RN (or BNE Compact State) license
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English
  • Able to serve as a professional and technical subject matter person in 4-5 surgical specialties.
  • Able to circulate as needed in all surgical specialties unless specialty call required (open heart, transplants, neuro). Call may be required (general, open heart/transplant, or neuro). 
  • Able to operate basic/standard pieces of OR equipment. 

 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Accurately assess and document the physiological, psychological, sociocultural, and spiritual health status of the patient on admission to the operating room utilizing age specific concerns for children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. Perform an ongoing assessment of the patient's physiological health status during the intraoperative phase. Communicate relevant health status data to other team members/departments.
  • Interpret health status data to anticipate patient's, patient's family, and physician's needs and expectations. Develop an appropriate plan of care for the patient and the planned surgical procedure. Utilize critical thinking skills in planning and prioritizing intraoperative nursing care per the planned surgical procedure.
  • Appropriately prioritize intraoperative nursing interventions per the patient's health status data, the physician, and the planned surgical procedure.
  • Identify and implement appropriate intraoperative nursing interventions based on health status data.
  • Complete accurate and timely documentation of these interventions.
  • Confer with all members of the health care team in a collaborative fashion, sharing information and observations of the patient and/or patient's family in a manner that contributes to optimal patient care.
  • Evaluate implemented interventions and modify care according to the evaluation. Document interventions and modifications to the plan of care in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Adhere to appropriate hospital and/or Surgical Services policies, procedures, and AORN standards of nursing practice while delivering intraoperative nursing care.
  • Provide appropriate and timely preoperative patient education to patient and/or patient's family. Complete accurate and timely documentation of education provided. Demonstrate effective communication with children, adolescents, adults, and older adults.
  • Supervise, direct, and coordinate the perioperative patient care assignments of other members of the healthcare team. Delegate duties appropriately and within legal parameters.
  • Able to serve as a professional and technical subject matter person in 4-5 surgical specialties.
  • Able to circulate as needed in all surgical specialties unless specialty call required (open heart, transplants, neuro).
  • Call may be required (general, open heart/transplant, or neuro)
