IMVU is an exciting social network for 3D avatars, letting creative individuals express themselves and connect to like-minded people around the world.
Our Big Data pipeline is getting bigger -- we will soon break the petabyte scale. Data and analytics are the underpinnings of our business, and the team that makes it all fit together is looking for you to join!
We use Hadoop with HIVE, Kafka, and Spark with Scala as our main data warehouse and analytics platform. We inject production data from millions of users, integrate with hundreds of third parties, and process it all into business insight, individualized recommendation data, and machine learning predictions.
You enjoy the challenge of bringing structure from chaos, building tables when there are log files, and working with the business analysts to find the best place to tap into our torrent of data to achieve the highest signal with the lowest noise. You are also comfortable with the Linux command line, and excited by working on computer systems that are bigger than a single rack and the data that goes into them. (You also presumably know what a "rack" is in this context!)
It's a bonus if you know how to look through PHP and Haskell source code to trace the progeny of data sources, how to talk to MySQL databases in production, and how to update an internal schema to match unannounced changes from an external third party.
This position provides a lot of freedom for a technically minded person to get the job done in the way that best serves the goals, and applying and developing skills in Spark/Scala, Kafka, and Hadoop.
