Experimental Plant Physiologist/Horticulturist/Botanist

Summary:

Horizon is seeking a self-motivated, innovative individual to work at the company’s R&D laboratory. This position’s primary responsibilities include

1. Coordinating with Product Development, Agricultural Research, Sales and Marketing Teams and external contract research organizations (CROs) to develop and execute field trials testing existing and new products.

2. Working with the cross functional teams to generate and interpret plant physiology data with respect to existing and new products.

3. Implementing new characterization equipment/techniques to monitor plant health

4. Partnering with product development to brainstorm next generation products

5. Managing and executing different plant assay experiments

The ideal candidate will demonstrate: a commitment to learning, strong problem-solving skills, effective and clear communication skills, meticulous attention to detail, an understanding of plant physiology and horticulture, and a dedication to maintaining a safe, clean, and efficient work environment.

Essential Functions:

· Develop and coordinate field trials, serving as the primary point of contact for contract research organizations.

· Design and conduct experiments, develop new procedures, and refine methodologies for testing products on plant growth and physiology.

· Work with technicians to ensure that experiments are carried out efficiently and correctly.

· Train technicians on equipment and data collection techniques.

· Analyze and present data collected from experiments.

· Research and explore opportunities for new products, technologies, and techniques to further our mission.

· Support Sales and Marketing by generating reports on relevant topics and developing laboratory tests and visual demonstrations of product effectiveness.

· Adhere strictly to safety standards during laboratory testing.

· Maintain equipment and perform routine instrument operation, maintenance and calibration.

· Other duties as assigned by the Agricultural Applications Research Manager.

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the qualities and skills described above, candidates should possess as many of the following qualifications as possible:

· Minimum of a B.S./B.A. degree. Preferred is a M.S. degree in biology, plant physiology, horticulture, agronomy, or a closely related field

· Experience growing plants in controlled environment settings (e.g. greenhouse, growth chambers)

· Experience working with field trials

· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

· Ability to coordinate personnel, equipment, and time

· Analytical and critical-thinking skills

· Aptitude for data analysis and statistics and the interpretation and application of those analyses

· Strong knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

Additional Information:

Classification: Exempt / Salary, paid bi-weekly, benefits eligible. Early career position with competitive compensation commensurate with experience
