User Interaction Designer

 

Job Summary

The User Interaction Designer is a key member of a multi-disciplinary team, collaborating with Product Management, Business Analysts, and developers on the creation of best in class user experiences. The User Interaction Designer will create prototypes, from wireframes to visual designs, and validate solution concepts via user input. The User Interaction Designer demonstrates conceptual and creative thinking to provide simple and elegant design approaches to complex design problems, leveraging current digital technologies.

 

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, while advocating the needs of end users, to brainstorm and explore potential solutions

  • Translate requirements into prototypes in the form of wireframes, interactive mockups, and visual concepts. Create visual components, HTML mock-ups and style sheets

  • Contribute to a wide range of design needs, including user interface design for web-based applications as well as visually pleasing web designs, incorporating responsive design techniques

  • Stay current on web accessibility requirements and trends. Serve as an expert and help reinforce section 508 and WCAG compliance across solutions

  • Provide feedback to the development team to validate that design and usability requirements are being met

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Participate in user research activities, including usability evaluations and user interviews. Use findings to improve the user experience, advocating the findings to the project team and stakeholders

  • Help bring together agile and user centered design techniques into the process

  • Prepare and maintain accurate and detailed usability and design guides, reinforcing compliance issues, brand guidelines, and ensuring these standards are represented in the final product

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of: Successful design and usability best practices for web sites and web-based applications across digital devices, incorporating responsive design techniques. Understanding of user centered design processes and methodology in an agile environment. Understanding of front-end web technologies. Expertise in accessibility.

Ability to: work independently demonstrating initiative; exercise good judgment in administration of responsibilities; adapt to and embrace change in a rapidly changing environment; establish work priorities and manage multiple projects; exhibit flexibility in work schedule and job tasks; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, vendors, clients, and other job contacts, including providing key support for the product manager; maintain confidentiality of confidential and sensitive information.

Skills in: verbal and written communications; application of job software including Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite. English word usage, spelling, sentence structure and punctuation; planning, scheduling, and organizing work and events.   

 

Minimum Qualifications

An appropriate combination of education, training, course work and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.  An example of an acceptable qualification for this position is:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline (Interaction Design, User Experience Design, Digital Design, Information Architecture or related)

  • 4 or more years as an interaction designer, digital designer, user experience designer or similar role

  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication, as well as proven problem-solving and organizational skills

  • Knowledge of HTML 5, jQuery, CSS3, JavaScript, Dreamweaver and Photoshop

  • Familiarity with AJAX, XML, PHP and other newer web technologies

  • Portfolio showcasing interaction design projects

  • Experience in the higher education industry is a plus

 

Ability to document identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.
