Systems Engineer


Job Summary

The Systems Engineer is responsible for installing, maintaining and documenting the higher education (HE) third party tools, such as tools used for monitoring and logging.    Involvement with the overall support of the HE infrastructure and its wide variety of technology components will also be included with this position.


We are currently hiring a Systems Engineer to work in either our Arlington, VA or Cincinnati, OH office.


Essential Functions/Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain and document the various HE monitoring systems and work towards a goal of retiring many of these systems and consolidating where possible
  • Provide support to security team with maintaining the HE Tenable servers and also running reports, and following up with security issues
  • Provide support with patching of Windows and Linux servers; work with configuring SCCM or determining another automated solution to patch our servers

Minimum Qualifications

An appropriate combination of education, training, course work and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.  An example of an acceptable qualification for this position is:


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience, preferably with a technical major such as engineering or computer science
  • Strong technical analysis skills and experience, including development of technical vision and strategies, functional decomposition, requirements capture and process modeling
  • Awareness of systems management, operational support and monitoring tools including Zenoss, IP Monitor, Orion, and Coradiant.  Has the ability to install, configure and maintain these products
  • 6 to 8 years or greater system administration experience
  • Experience in installing, configuring and managing both Windows and Linux operating systems. Also includes deployment software (Cobbler, Kickstart)
  • Experience with configuration management and patch delivery systems (Microsoft Systems Center Configuration Manager, Chef, Puppet)
  • Experience with shell scripting such as PowerShell and Bash
  • Experience with capacity planning
  • Experience with performance management

Ability to document identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements. 


Other Qualifications

Experience with the following is not required but candidates having particular skills in the following areas are a plus.


  • Security and infrastructure experience including configuration of maintenance of hardware (Sonicwall) and software firewalls, load balancers and WAN optimizers (F5 and Riverbed), gateways, routers and switches (HP, Dell).  Knowledge of implementing and managing cloud security (Amazon) is also highly desirable
  • Experience with configuration and management of storage area networks (EMC, Dell Equal Logic)
  • Experience with configuration and management of virtualization environments (VMWare VCenter / VSphere)
  • Designing highly available and scalable solutions via replication, clustering, load balancing and other techniques
  • Experience in administration of message queuing (RabbitMQ) and caching (MemBase) applications
  • Network packet analyzers and packet analysis software including Wireshark
  • Experience with Python scripting language a plus
  • Experience installing, configuring and maintaining web servers including Internet Information Server (IIS 6, 7), Apache
  • Experience installing, configuring and maintaining application servers (Tomcat)
