Job Description

Senior EO Attorney/Of Counsel

The Firm:

Harmon, Curran, Spielberg & Eisenberg, LLP, a law firm in Washington, DC serving the nonprofit public interest community, is seeking an experienced nonprofit tax attorney to serve as a Senior Associate or Of Counsel in our firm’s exempt organization practice.

Harmon Curran helps progressive nonprofit organizations and the funders and individuals who support them with the full scope of legal issues they most commonly confront. We are a small, collegial, mission-driven firm that has been in existence for more than 50 years. The attorney will work primarily with the exempt organization practice group.

The Job:

We are seeking a senior candidate with a minimum of 7 years of nonprofit tax law experience. Qualified candidates should have experience with the range of legal issues that nonprofit organizations and the funders and individuals who support them typically confront, including seeking and maintaining tax exemption; relationships among affiliated organizations such as 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and 527 organizations; lobbying and political campaign activities; and the special rules governing private foundations.  Familiarity with campaign finance law is also desirable.

In addition to nonprofit tax work, the attorney may advise clients about topics such as structural and governance issues; fundraising contracts and compliance with state and federal laws; contract and lease review and drafting; intellectual property questions, such as trademark and copyright; legal issues related to the Internet and other electronic media; and insurance issues. Experience in any of these areas is not required but is a plus.

Qualified candidates will be motivated self-starters with strong academic credentials, excellent writing and communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to handle complicated matters with minimal supervision.   Candidates should also be able to work both independently and as part of a group, have strong attention to detail, be comfortable managing multiple and varied client requests, and be able to quickly digest and provide advice regarding new state and federal laws. Candidates must be a member of or be eligible for admission to the DC Bar.

Salary and Benefits:

This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week) position with an expected annual salary of $130,000 - $170,000  (commensurate with experience).  We offer 3 weeks of vacation plus sick days, generous medical benefits, 401k with match, and annual profit sharing.

We are open to flexible work arrangements. Due to COVID-19 most lawyers have been working remotely, but the position will be based out of our downtown DC office.
